Falling 12-0 Friday during the semifinals of the Vienna Eagles Fall Baseball Classic, Dakota Mason’s Vienna Eagles earned another shot at Eugene’s Eagles Saturday afternoon in the third-place game.
Tying things up at 4-4 after three innings, Vienna could not answer a three-run bottom of the third inning from Cole County’s Eagles before falling 7-4 to Eugene in five innings via the tournament time-limit rule.
Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Vienna tied the game in the top of the second inning when Reid Nichols walked with the bases loaded forcing in Troy Wulff with the game-tying run.
Eugene quickly answered with three runs on four walks and three hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Waylon Lenning started Vienna’s latest answer in the top of the third inning with a one-out single before walks to Troy Wulff and Brett Welschmeyer loaded the bases.
Wulff scored on a passed ball before RBI singles from Hunter Schwartze and Raymond Logan knotted the game back up at 4-4 entering the bottom of the third inning.
Walking six batters in the bottom of the fourth inning, Vienna saw Eugene turn those into three runs.
Schwartze had a team-high two hits for Vienna against Eugene while Dylan Long drew a pair of walks.
Friday against St. Elizabeth, Lenning and Wyatt Wulff each had base hits for the Eagles to break up the Hornets bid for a perfect game and no-hitter.
Mason’s Eagles were on the road last night (Tuesday) at Crocker and will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) hosting Tuscumbia’s Lions at Vienna City Park with a 5 p.m., first pitch.
