It was a big week in more ways than one for the Vienna High School boys’ and girls’ cross country team last week.
The Eagle runners got a good, long look against some strong competition on the upcoming state championship course at the Brian T. Simpson Invitational, held Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Gans Creek course in Columbia.
In addition, the Vienna boys and girls repeated as the high school and middle school team champions at the Show-Me Central Conference Meet, held on the Eagles’ home course at Vienna City Park Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Saturday’s meet was for Class 1 and Class 2 schools only. There were 27 full teams in the boys’ race and Vienna finished fifth overall with 185 points. Kingsville was the team champ with 79 points while St. Joseph Christian was second with 109.
Eagle senior Hunter Schwartze ran a season-best 16:39.0 on the 5,000-meter course to finish third overall. Westran’s Reece Sickler was medalist with 16:28.1 while St. Joseph Christian’s Austin Hill was runner-up with 16:28.
Hill was state runner-up and Schwartze finished third overall in last year’s Class 1 State Championships.
In the 3,000-meter middle school race both the Vienna boys’ and girls’ teams finished third in the team standings. For the Eagle Middle School boys Coen Schwartze finished ninth over and for the Lady Eagles Emerson Jeremy was 16th at 13:29.4 while Rowan Walker was 20th at 13:39.7.
“It is always a good day to run on the state course,” said Vienna coach David Martin. “This was the best finish that our middle school girls have earned at this meet. It is great that both middle school groups played in the top three. I think our middle school runners competed well in warm conditions. Many of them ran season and personal best times. And we had some very competitive high school races that was like a mini Class 1 State Meet.”
With very little competition at the Show-Me Central Conference race, it appeared like a Vienna practice session much of the time. The home school swept the conference team titles in the boys’ and girls’ high school and middle school meets as the only full team in each field.
H. Schwartze was boys’ medalist with his top home-course time of 17:18.6 while teammates Bryce Ewers, Eli Messersmith and Paxten Jeremy were 2-3-4, respectively. In the girls’ high school race Prairie Home’s Ruth Hodges was meet medalist at 23:14.4 and Vienna’s Sophia Neubert was second at 23:20.2.
Coen Schwartze and Emerson Jeremy were the middle school conference medalists.
“Our teams won a lot of conference honors,” Martin said. “Hunter will graduate not losing a conference race and it was nice to sweep the team awards again.”
In the girls’ race a Vienna runner who was down in the overall pack collapsed and was taken from City Park by helicopter to a medical facility. She was cleared to return home and by the end of the week was back in school.
“Out of abundance of caution she was taken to a hospital, but is doing well now,” Martin said Sunday of the girl.
This week Vienna was scheduled to compete in the Dixon Invitational Monday and at the Smithton Pumpkin Run at 9 a.m. Saturday.
