Another strong performance was churned out by the Vienna High boys’ cross country squad and senior standout Hunter Schwartze last week.
With Schwartze earning another meet-medalist finish, the Eagles went on to capture the team championship of the Calvary Lutheran Invitational, held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Holts Summit.
Vienna was pushed by Van-Far before winning the team title with 44 points. Van-Far was runner-up with 51 while Belle was third with 72. There were six full teams in the field.
Schwartze crossed the finish line in a time of 16:49.2, well ahead of Van-Far’s Slade Keller’s runner-up time of 17:26.7. The Eagles had two other top-10 finishes, as freshman Eli Messersmith finished ninth at 18:59.8 and sophomore Paxten Jeremy 10th at 19:08.1. Rounding out Vienna’s score was freshman Tanner Hallahan 12th at 19:12.3 and junior Bryce Ewers 18th at 19:39.4.
Van-Far won the girls’ team title with 37 points, one better than second-place Paris. The Lady Eagles did not field a full squad.
Dixon’s Breauna Stotler was girls’ medalist at 22:42.5. Leading the Vienna girls was sophomore Sophia Neubert, who was sixth overall at 23:11.7.
This week Vienna was scheduled to host the Show-Me Central Conference Meet Tuesday at Vienna City Park. Vienna is to also compete in the Brian T. Simpson Invite Saturday, Oct. 10, to be held at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, with action beginning at 10:30 a.m.
