Splitting a pair of games Friday at the Eugene Fall Baseball Bash, Dakota Mason’s Vienna fall baseball Eagles looked to Eugene with third-place hardware after taking on New Bloomfield’s Wildcats.
Plating three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second innings, Vienna held off the Wildcats by a final score of 5-4 to leave Cole County with third-place hardware.
Seeing New Bloomfield turn a double and two hit batters into a run in the top of the first inning, Vienna looked to answer that run and then some in the bottom half of the first inning.
Helping his own cause, starting pitcher Gavin Schwartze tripled and scored when Waylon Lenning delivered a two-RBI single driving in Eli Hayes and Schwartze giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Lenning scored later in the inning on a two-out RBI single from Hunter Schwartze bumping Vienna’s lead to 3-1 after an inning.
After Schwartze held New Bloomfield scoreless in the top of the second inning, Vienna’s offense went back to work looking to give their pitcher a bigger lead in the bottom half of the second..
Sam Rowden led the frame off with a single before scoring on a Gavin Schwartze RBI ground out giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Hayes then continued the two-out rally reaching on an error before stealing second base.
Hunter Wulff then reached on an error allowing Hayes to score and give Vienna a 5-1 lead entering the third inning.
New Bloomfield cut Vienna’s lead in half with two runs and a double and two errors in the top of the third inning before an inning-ending double play limited the damage inflicted by the Wildcats.
Limiting New Bloomfield to one run the rest of the game, Gavin Schwartze earned the win allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts.
In Friday action at Eugene, Vienna fell 2-0 to the host Eagles before turning back Pilot Grove 11-3.
Gavin Schwartze led Vienna with two hits and three runs scored against the Tigers while Eli Hayes also had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles against Pilot Grove.
