Vienna softball claims ninth straight GVC title

Posted

Last Tuesday at Vienna City Park, Chandler Harker’s Vienna Lady Eagles were looking to wrap up their ninth consecutive Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) title in softball.

Randis Sanders’ Belle Lady Tigers were after a share of the GVC title while snapping Vienna’s 33-game GVC softball winning streak in the process.

Trailing 7-2 in the top of the seventh, Belle put two runs on the board and had the tying run at the plate before a strikeout ended the game.

“Our girls gave themselves a chance in a do-or-die situation and I’m proud of them for not giving up,” Sanders said.

Holding on for a 7-4 victory, Vienna clinched another GVC title and upped their GVC softball win streak to 34 games.

“Belle made us earn this one today,” Harker said. “We were able to get the lead and make plays when we needed them late in the game to hold on.”

Vienna broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning when senior starting pitcher Eva Hollis tripled and scored on an Ella Hollis RBI double for a 1-0 lead.

Ella Hollis later scored on a Aubrey Schwartze RBI sacrifice fly doubling Vienna’s lead to 2-0 after one inning.

Belle answered in the top of the second when Miranda Sanders delivered a leadoff single before scoring with two outs on a Ileana Sullinger RBI single cutting Vienna’s lead to 2-1 entering the bottom of the second inning.

Lady Tiger senior pitcher Nevaeh Kinsey retired the Lady Eagles in order keeping Belle’s deficit at 2-1 after two innings.

Belle sophomore shortstop Aubrey Rehmert tripled leading off the top of the third inning before scoring on a Natalie Gehlert RBI single tying the game at 2-2.

Vienna retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out rally started by a Eva Hollis triple. Before Eva scored on a wild pitch, Ella Hollis walked and scored on a Schwartze RBI single giving Vienna a 4-2 lead through three innings.

Victoria Busch walked to lead off the top of the fourth for Belle before a double play helped Vienna get out of the frame.

Vienna’s bottom half of their lineup added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Marissa Hollis and Madison Weeks started the frame with back-to-back singles before a Jaelee Stricklan two-RBI double gave the Lady Eagles a 6-2 lead.

Stricklan later scored on a Salene George RBI sacrifice bunt pushing the Vienna lead to 7-2 through four innings.

Following scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Vienna was now three outs away from another GVC softball crown.

Sullinger started Belle’s seventh-inning rally with a one-out double.

A Rehmert intentional walk and a Natalie Gehlert single loaded the bases for Dakota Butcher.

Butcher laced a line drive only to see it caught by Schwartze for the second out of the inning.

Kinsey helped her cause keeping the inning alive with a two-RBI single cutting Vienna’s lead to 7-4.

Eva Hollis earned the win for Vienna allowing four runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out six Lady Tigers.

Kinsey took the loss allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks to go with one strikeout.

Saturday at the South Callaway Softball Tournament, Vienna bounced back from a 6-1 first-round loss to Eugene with wins over Silex (5-0) and Salisbury (10-3) to claim consolation hardware from Mokane.

Hosting Dixon Monday night in their pink-out game, Belle won their Highway 28 showdown 11-5 behind Aubrey Rehmert’s sixth home run of the season helping the Lady Tiger snap a four-game losing streak after falling to Linn (4-3), Westminster Christian Academy (8-3) and St. Francis Borgia (10-4).
