After opening the 2022 portion of their season hosting St. Elizabeth’s Hornets Friday night, Chandler Harker’s Vienna Eagles will hit the road for tournament basketball over the next two weeks.

Drawing the top seed at the South Callaway Boys Basketball Tournament in Mokane, Harker’s Eagles will face a familiar foe in first-round action.

Already owning a 75-35 victory over New Bloomfield from the first round of the Tipton Tournament a month ago, Vienna will once again face the eighth-seeded Wildcats in opening-round action at South Callaway beginning next Tuesday.

Another victory would keep them in the SCHS gym in the semifinals against the winner of the host Bulldogs and New Haven’s Shamrocks.

Possible opponents for the Eagles on the bottom half of the bracket at South Callaway include second-seeded Hermann, third-seeded Montgomery County, seventh-seeded Calvary Lutheran and sixth-seeded North Callaway.

After three games in Mokane next week, Vienna’s tournament road swing will take them west on Highway 42 to Iberia for their annual basketball tournament.

A schedule for action in Ranger country will be in next week’s Advocate.

While their Eagle counterparts are hosting St. Elizabeth Friday night, Kevin Schwartze’s Lady Eagles will be competing over the weekend in the Calvary Lutheran Girls Basketball Tournament.

Vienna’s Lady Eagles will open tournament action at Calvary Lutheran against the St. Louis Knights on Friday at 4:30 p.m., at Calvary Lutheran High School (CLHS).

A win would keep them at CLHS for semifinal action Saturday morning at 8 a.m., against the winner of Columbia Independent School (CIS) and the host Lady Lions while a loss would send them to Trinity Lutheran School and the consolation side of the bracket also at 8 a.m., against the loser of CIS and CLHS.

VHS would then play their third game in nearly 24 hours Saturday afternoon at either 2 or 5 p.m., depending on how they fare in their first two tournament contests.

Following action at CLHS over the weekend, Schwartze’s Lady Eagles will take their turn hosting St. Elizabeth’s Lady Hornets on Monday, Jan. 10 in varsity-only action at the Eagles’ nest at 6 p.m.
