Softball Eagles run GVC win streak to 33 games

A share of their ninth consecutive Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) softball title.

That is what Chandler Harker’s Vienna Lady Eagle softball team was after Monday night on the road in Crawford County against Cuba’s Lady Wildcats.

Leading 7-0 after two innings, Vienna busted the game open with a seven-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning before going on to a 21-1 victory in four innings over Cuba for their 33rd consecutive victory within GVC softball.

Starting the game batting as the visiting team, Vienna turned a two-out rally in the top of the first inning into a quick 2-0 lead.

Ella Hollis singled with two outs before Aubrey Schwartze hit a two-run home run to left field breaking the scoreless tie giving the Lady Eagles an early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore starting pitcher Addi James benefited from a double play in the bottom of the first inning to help keep Cuba off the scoreboard after one frame.

Six Vienna hits in the top of the second inning led to five runs and a 7-0 lead going to the bottom of the second in Cuba.

Reaching base and scoring for Vienna in the top of the second were Eva Hollis, Ella Hollis, Schwartze, Jaelee Stricklan and Aubrey Reeves.

Keeping their shutout bid alive after the bottom of the second, Vienna added eight runs in the top of the third inning bumping their lead to 15-0.

Reaching base and crossing the plate for Vienna in the frame were Salene George, Eva Hollis, Ella Hollis, Kayla Hertzing, Marissa Hollis, Madison Weeks, Reeves and Schwartze.

Cuba scratched across a run on a hit and two errors extending the game into the fourth inning with Vienna still leading 15-1.

Five walks and two hits led to six more Vienna runs in the top of the fourth inning against Cuba.

Singling and scoring were Addi James and Kaylee Bresnahan.

Drawing a walk and scoring were Charlotte Kilmer, Marissa Hollis, Hertzing and Schwartze.

Retiring Cuba in order in the bottom of the fourth inning, James put the finishing touches on a 21-1 Vienna victory in four innings.

James earned the win allowing an unearned run on three hits to go with a walk and five strikeouts.

Ella Hollis led the Lady Eagles with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in (RBI).

Schwartze and Hertzing each drove in a game-high four RBIs for Vienna.

Reeves also collected three hits for Vienna while scoring two runs and driving three more.

During Saturday’s Owensville Tournament, Vienna went 2-1 on the day winning an 11-10 slug fest over Russellville and edging Pacific 7-5.

Their lone blemish came in the form of a 9-3 loss to the host Dutchgirls.

In their win over Russellville, Vienna trailed 2-0 after one inning before exploding for a five-run top of the second inning.

Russellville came back with a run in the second and two in the third to tie the game at 5-5 after three innings.

Vienna answered with another five-spot in the top of the fourth inning reclaim their five-run lead.

Seeing Russellville answer with a run in the bottom of the fourth, Vienna scored a valuable insurance run in the top of the fifth inning which was the difference in the game.

George led the Lady Eagles against Russellville with three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs while Ella Hollis also had three hits.

Hertzing and Stricklan each also had two hits for Vienna against the Lady Indians from Cole County.

Eva Hollis earned the win in relief of James against Russellville pitching two and two-thirds innings allowing five unearned runs on five hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts.

Against Pacific, Schwartze and George each had a team-high three hits while Marissa Hollis drove in a team-high two runs.

In their loss to Owensville, Ella Hollis and Hertzing both had two hits while Hollis also scored a pair of runs to go with her two hits.

Vienna will face Jamestown on the road tonight (Wednesday) with a 5 p.m., first pitch.
