The Vienna High School baseball squad kicked off its fall season with a pair of home shutout victories last week against Frisco League competition.
Monday, Aug. 31 the Eagles blanked the Dixon Bulldogs 5-0 at Vienna City Park. The game had been originally scheduled to be played in Dixon but was moved to Vienna due to a problem with the Dixon pitching mound. Then the game was moved back two hours due to the heat.
Vienna then got another pitching gem Wednesday, Sept. 2 at City Park by stopping the Stoutland Tigers 1-0. That game, too, was backed up due to heat.
This week Vienna was scheduled to play at Calvary Lutheran Tuesday and at Prairie Home Friday (5 p.m.).
Aug. 31 at Vienna - Vienna 5, Dixon 0: Three pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout for the Eagles. Senior lefty Hunter Schwartze started on the mound and worked two innings and allowed three walks while fanning six. He was replaced by senior Mason Via, who allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two. Senior Evan Simmons finished up by tossing three innings of hitless, walk-free ball while fanning six. In all, 14 Dixon batters struck out.
Vienna had just four hits, one each by Schwartze, Simmons, Via and senior Jaiden Hayes. Simmons drove in three runs and Via two. Schwartze and sophomore Bentley Haller each scored twice, with Schwartze stealing two bases.
Sept. 2 at Vienna - Vienna 1, Stoutland 0: Eagle pitchers Simmons and Hayes combined to threw a two-hitter at the Stoutland Tigers. Simmons started on the mound and worked three innings while giving up two hits, two walks and striking out three. Hayes finished up the final four innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while fanning five.
A stolen base in the second inning gave Vienna the game’s lone run. On sophomore Paxten Jeremy’s steal of third base, Stoutland fired the ball there and it got past the Tiger third baseman and Jeremy came home with the lone run.
Again Vienna had four hits, with Hayes clubbing a triple and double and junior Wyatt Wulff getting two singles. Jeremy stole two bases.
