Lady Eagles fight back in Linn but fall short

VIENNA — The Vienna Varsity Lady Eagles (8-6) had a short week on the diamond, with rain and cancellations keeping the team from playing Crocker and Tuscumbia. Tuscumbia canceled their season due to a lack of players, and a game against Crocker was rained out, giving the Lady Eagles a rare off week to catch their breath before a busy stretch.

The team traveled to Linn for their only game this week, coming up just short in a 7-5 loss. Down 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Vienna staged an impressive rally, scoring five runs and showing the kind of grit that has become a hallmark of the team. Despite out-hitting Linn eight to five, the Lady Eagles couldn’t quite close the gap.

Aubrey Rehmert led the team offensively with three hits, while Aubrey Schwartze provided a highlight moment with a three-run homer over the left-field fence, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate. Catcher Ella Hollis also earned herself a spot on the stat sheet by adding a hit.

On the mound, Delaney Schwartze delivered six innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, three of them earned. She struck out four and walked six, showing resilience despite the tough outing.

Looking ahead, the cancelations might be a blessing for the Lady Eagles as they have a packed schedule this week, welcoming Cuba on Tuesday, traveling to Richmond Thursday, and competing in the South Callaway Tournament this weekend.

Even in a loss, Vienna’s Lady Eagles displayed determination and flashes of brilliance, setting the stage for an exciting week ahead on the softball field.

Athletic Director Kevin Schwartze noted that last week’s 10-inning contest was one of the longest games in recent Vienna Softball history, recalling a previous game that stretched 13 innings.
