Eagles, Tigers claim top two spots at Calvary Lutheran Invitational

Three days after a solid showing at St. James, Maries County cross country runners ventured to Jefferson City’s Binder Park to compete Saturday in the Calvary Luthearn Invitational Cross Country meet.

Once the varsity boys race concluded, Belle’s Tigers and Vienna’s Eagles accounted for half of the top 10 in addition to the top two spots of the team standings.

Helping Vienna (44) edge Belle (46) by two points was senior Duncan Wilkinson with a third-place time of 19:22.17.

He was followed by Brayden Ewers’ sixth-place time of 19:34.28 for the Eagles.

Grabbing three of the final six medals for Vienna were Cooper Auten (14th, 20:19.45), Hunter Schwartze (17th, 20:47.36) and Gavin Schwartze (19th, 21:16.00).

Senior Baylar Smith led Belle’s varsity boys with a fifth-place time of 19:26.28 followed in the top 10 by teammates Garrett Gehlert (9th, 19:58.77) and Connor Weigel (10th, 20:05.32).

Claiming two of the final three medals for Belle’s Tigers were Barrett Finnegan (18th, 21:00.36) and Miles Frey (20th, 21:34.60).

Additional county runners at Calvary Lutheran included Vienna’s Jackson Kilmer (21st), Belle’s Karsin Siefert (38th) and Belle’s Adrien Hoehne (40th).

Belle’s varsity girls duo of Nolie Finnegan (4th, 25:13.61) and Tajel McDaniel (9th, 27:07.04) left Jefferson City with medals.

Vienna freshman Kaylee Bresnahan made it three county runners with medals in the varsity girls race taking 16th place in 28:20.46.

Fielding the lone scoring team in the middle school boys division, Vienna’s Eagles were led by race winner Bryce Ewers in a time of 12:56.20.

Other medalists for the VMS Eagles were Tyler Hallahan (4th, 13:51.98), Gage Curler (5th, 13:58.32), Eli Messersmith (7th, 14:02.02) and Dalton Timm (10th, 15:01.59.

Bland’s duo of Jackson Prater (2nd, 13:23.79) and Alden Zabel (8th, 14:26.27) helped make it seven county harriers in the top 10.

Also competing for VMS’ Eagles were Tanner Hallahan (11th), Alex Wieberg (12th), Zach Wansing (13th), Drew Crum (15th) and Ben Murray (17th).

Weston Sadler rounded out Bland’s contingency of Bears placing 14th.

In the middle school girls race, Bland’s duo of Ava Prater (2nd, 15:22.38) and Skylar Stevens (8th, 16:35.83) left Binder Park in Jefferson City with medals.

Marianne Francis (13th) and Allania Moore (20th) also ran for the Lady Bears.

Zoe Hawk led VMS’ Lady Eagles with an 18th-place time of 18:39.78 followed by teammates Riley McKinnon (22nd) and Sophia Neubert (23rd).

Last Wednesday in St. James, Finnegan was the lone medalist in the varsity girls race placing sixth while Auten (5th), Gehlert (8th) and Ewers (13th) each earned medals during the varsity boys race.

Middle school racing from St. James saw the Prater siblings both medal with Jackson taking fourth and Ava placing fifth.

Earning medals for VMS at St. James were Curler (9th) and Messersmith (10th).

Bland, Belle and Vienna will all return to action today (Wednesday) at the Cuba Invitational scheduled to start at 4 p.m., at Cuba Lakes Golf Course.
