VIENNA — When the filing deadline passed for the April municipal election, only one candidate had filed for any of Vienna’s three open positions.
North Ward Aldermen Reva Hutchison filed to retain her seat on the city council. South Ward Aldermen Jesse Jones and Mayor Tyler “TC” James did not file for their seats.
Three more candidates emerged during the filing period that closed Jan. 24 for write-in candidates. Charles Davis filed as a write-in candidate for the South Ward seat. David Juergens and Dustin Foster filed as write-in candidates for mayor.
Aldermen and mayors each serve four-year terms.
If no candidates had filed during the write-in period, the council members would have appointed new members following the board reorganization in April.
As of 3 p.m. Jan. 24, no one else had filed as a write-in candidate.
Even though voters may choose to write in names that are not on the ballot, write-in votes will not count unless the person has officially declared as a write-in candidate before the deadline.
James said at the Jan. 9 city council meeting he would help someone new learn the mayor role.
“Four years is a long time to commit to it,” he said about choosing to not run for reelection. “I have a few other things I’d like to do.”
