It is imperative that we progress

Although we are experiencing a time of division and distrust in the national political scene, with Congress seemingly unwilling to work together for the general benefit of the voters, we remain blessed with transparent and responsive representation at the local levels. Our municipalities, school boards and county governments maintain a close tie with the will of the local constituency.

On April 7 we have another chance to show support for OUR school district, Gasconade County R-2, as its board of directors is proposing a $14.9 million bond issue for numerous program and capital improvements.

Historically, the voters of this district have been very supportive of such issues, and the results have given us a school district that we are quite proud of.  Recently, however, organized resistance to this bond issue has been a factor in it failing by a narrow margin twice. I don’t understand the resistance, and cannot shed any positive light on such effort. Is that who we are?

Having served 15 years on the R-2 School Board, I can attest that respecting our taxpayers’ dollars was always a high priority. I am certain that remains true with the capable directors currently serving us. I cannot imagine a more committed, responsive and transparent entity than our current school board.  They have spelled out in detail exactly where the tax dollars will go with the passage of the bond issue. It’s on the district website, https://www.dutchmen.us/page/prop-gcr2.

The current debt service rate of $0.67 has not changed in 20 years. The last change was in 2006, when the rate was reduced, from $0.87 to $0.67.  This is a conservative district, and this school board continues to respect the tax burden of its supporters, patiently waiting to present a bond issue until it could be done without increasing the debt service rate.

At the same time, it is imperative that we progress with the times and compare favorably with the facilities and programs offered by other school districts, in order to attract and retain quality staff and give our kids the best opportunities. We’ve been blessed for many years with strong teachers, administrators and staff in this district.

I believe strongly in public education. But, public education can only be at its best when EVERYONE works together. I have never voted against a school issue, and have no plans to start now. I will do my part on April 7, with a YES vote to keep Gasconade County R-2 moving in a POSITIVE direction.
