Sheriff candidate Thompson identifies local ties, communication as key skills

VIENNA — Buddy Thompson, 53, recently discussed his final thoughts on his campaign for Maries County sheriff ahead of next Tuesday’s Republican primary election.

Thompson said he sees his deep ties to the community as something that makes him the most qualified candidate for the job.

“I think being local really helps me a lot,” he said. “Because I truly want what is best for the county. I’m going to stay here no matter what. It doesn’t matter if one of the other candidates wins. I’m not going anywhere.”

Thompson mentioned a few other skills that he possesses that he believes separate him from the other candidates.

“You have to learn to control yourself,” he said. “I do that very well. I’ve learned that over the years very well, even back before when I worked full-time (as a deputy) that I could do that. You never let them see you get angry. You may get angry somewhere else, but you never, ever, let someone see you lose that side of it.”

Thompson said his communication abilities are another strength he has that would help him as the next sheriff. He specifically mentioned his verbal communication and his approach to meeting new people as skills he would lean on as sheriff. He also said he would use that prowess to work with other local law enforcement agencies, especially if a post-election exodus from the sheriff’s office were to happen.

Another skill Thompson said he would use is honesty.

“I’ve said this before,” he said. “If you can’t be honest with people, what good is your word?”

In his final pitch to voters, Thompson again turned to his local ties.

“I just truly want what’s best for the county,” he said. “It’s not about a power trip for me. It’s not about control. It’s not about any of those things. I just want what is best for Maries County and the law enforcement.”

Thompson also revisited the idea of transparency and ensuring that the public knows what goes on at the sheriff’s office.

“If we could get somebody back in there who would do right by the voters, and truly do what’s best for the county, and spend their tax dollars correctly and be more accountable and more upfront about where their tax dollars have gone.”
