Shanks charged with third-degree domestic assault

BELLE  — Osage County Prosecuting Attorney Amanda Grellner recently charged Amber N. Shanks, 42, of Belle, with third-degree domestic assault after she allegedly struck her boyfriend in the mouth at the home in which they live together.

Sgt. Ricky Jarvis noted that he reported to the residence with Belle Police Officer Morgan just before 11 p.m. on Feb. 21. They saw a female, later identified as Shanks, standing on the porch.

The victim told authorities that he had come home to find Shanks intoxicated. She allegedly began to throw things around the house.

According to Jarvis, the victim went outside to get away from Shanks, but she followed and attempted to hit him with a closed left fist. That swing missed, but the victim said Shanks struck him in the mouth with her right fist.

Jarvis noted the victim appeared to have a swollen upper lip and a small cut inside the mouth.

The victim said he pushed Shanks away in an attempt to halt the assault.

While speaking with the victim, Shanks continued to yell and threaten him on the front porch. Jarvis noted that Shanks also threatened Officer Morgan and asked if he wanted to die. Shanks made numerous threats to the victim and said, “They were going to all go down,” according to the PC statement.

Shanks re-entered the residence, and Jarvis followed her.

During a lengthy conversation with Jarvis in the home, Shanks would not speak about the incident, but said she did not assault the victim. Shanks became agitated to the point that Jarvis placed her in handcuffs for his safety and that of the victim.

Jarvis and Morgan took Shanks outside, where she continued to threaten the victim.

Deputy Amy Keilholz arrived at the scene and attempted to speak with Shanks but was unable to get a statement about what happened.

Shanks was transported to the Osage County Detention Center, where she was held on a no-bond warrant. A bond hearing before Judge Sonya Brandt was scheduled for March 12.
