Retired SFC Hersel Chadbourne

Hersel George “Rocky” Chadbourne, 71, of Crocker, passed away Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 16, 1952, to Hersel Willard and Emeline Aretta (Knowlan) Chadbourne in Farmington, Maine.   

Rocky entered active federal service in the U.S. Army in 1975, at Manchester, N.H., and honorably served for 20 years. He retired at Fort Leonard Wood, at the rank of Sergeant First Class. While serving in the U.S. Army, he was a Combat Engineer, Senior Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Squad Leader, Atomic Demolition Munitions Specialist, and an instructor.

He was united in marriage to Mary Marion Ruth Welch, Jan. 29, 1972, at Pembroke, N.H.

Rocky was baptized later in life and was a member of Christ’s Mission Church, St. Robert. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

After his retirement from the military, Rocky continued working as a manager at Arts and Crafts, Fort Leonard Wood.

He was preceded in death by parents, Hersel and Emeline; brother, Thomas Chadbourne; and sisters, Janet Hopps, Brenda Hill and Terry Cantara.

He is survived by wife Mary of the home in Crocker; children, Tracie Chadbourne (Gary) of Leesburg, Va., Kami Adair (Joseph) of Bray, Okla., Travis Chadbourne of Crocker, and Justin Chadbourne (Jessica) of St. Robert; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and brother, Larry Chadbourne (Kim) of Pembroke, N.H.

Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, in the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Dixon, with Pastor Jeff Brown officiating. Interment with full military honors was held in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Waynesville.
