VIENNA — The Maries R-1 School Board members, at the board’s September meeting, heard updates on current campus improvement projects and opened bids on a roofing repairs.

Superintendent Teresa Messersmith fielded questions about the projects. During the approval of bills process, the bill from Andy Wilbers Plumbing for $2,901 was mentioned. Messersmith said this was for the elementary restroom repairs to the sinks and toilets. The plumber reattached the sinks and toilets. While he was on campus, the plumber also hooked up a garbage disposal in the cafeteria. Messersmith said there are still issues with that restroom as when it was remodeled they put in a cabinet for the sinks and the students could not reach the sinks. It was pulled out and a floating wall was put in. This needs to be fixed. She said this will be done when there is a school break. She reported the stools and sinks are working now.

They also discussed the contract with Midwest Roofing which proposes to furnish all the labor and material for the purpose of repairing the wind-damaged roofing, rotting decking and additional shingle repairs to the wind-damaged slope on the elementary roof on the Highway 42 side. Messersmith said because the roof is leaking into the school, they can close down the hallway. She has worked with Midwest Roofing before and said they are a good company to work with. They asked her if the board wants to repair the slope the insurance will cover or fix the whole slope. She said they want it done correctly.

It will cost $51,580 to do the whole slope. The company asked for a down payment of $22,646.90 and the final payment will be $28,934. Insurance is covering $21,646.90 of the cost.

Board member Mike Kleffner said many times more plywood is needed than is included in the bid. Messersmith said the bid included a lot of plywood because they suspected it will be needed. The company can start within two to three weeks and the job will be done before winter.

The board members agreed it is best to do the whole slope. Kleffner said if the other side needs it at least “we got that part done.” The board accepted the bid for the work on the elementary school roof.

Messersmith said they will be using the bond money to pay for the project.

The school district had two bids to open for the middle school roof repairs. Board President Vicki Bade opened the bids. Missouri Builders Services, Jefferson City, bid $108,219. Weathercraft, Inc., Jefferson City, bid $153,900. The board accepted the Missouri Builders Services bid.

Two bids were received for the retaining wall construction. Reese Equipment Company LLC, Dixon, bid $18,516 for 50 feet retaining wall. It also bid $3,277 for a sidewalk, which was not part of the bid. Stricklan Bobcat Concrete, LLC, Vienna, bid $14,400. The board accepted the bid from Stricklan.

There were no bids for either the gym seal repairs and for the exterior door replacement. They discussed reaching out to different people and companies they know of who may be interested in doing the work. On the door replacement, Bade suggested a longer completion date. They are replacing them for security reasons.
