Maries R-1 meal prices to increase, VIPS students approved to play on R-1 sports teams

VIENNA — Breakfast and lunch prices will increase for students and staff at Maries R-1 School for the 2022-2023 school year.

The R-1 school board approved the recommendation to raise the lunch prices during action at the board’s June meeting last week. Superintendent Teresa Messersmith said they have to increase the meal prices to remain in compliance with DESE. The price increases she recommended are the minimum prices the school can charge and remain in compliance.

Lunches will increased $0.60 per meal. Breakfasts increased $1.00 per meal. And, adult lunches increased $1.38 per meal.

In comparison, the meal prices during the 2019-2020 school year will be in parenthesis, followed by the new prices for the 2022-2023 school year approved recently by the school board. Elementary lunch ($2.20) increased to $2.80, middle school lunch ($2.30) increased to $2.90, high school lunch ($2.40) increased to $3.00, adult lunch ($3.12) increased to $4.50, and breakfast ($1.50) increased to $2.50.

During the pandemic students ate breakfast and lunch for free and the government paid for it. Also, lunches were delivered to students who signed up when school was not in session due to the lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The school board also accepted the only milk bid the school district received, which was from Hiland. Milk went up seven cents a carton. The board also accepted the bread bid, again the only one, from G&W Foods, which went up very little.

Board President Vicki Bade said the board members had tabled an item on last month’s agenda, which is whether or not the board will approve allowing Visitation Inter-Parish School (VIPS) students to play on Maries R-1’s middle school teams. VIPS has established a co-op according to MSHSAA to allow it.

Bade made the motion to allow VIPS middle school age students to participate on Maries R-1 middle school sports teams during the 2022-2023 school year, and to revisit it the following year. She said it has to be approved every year. The motion received a second and all of the board members voted in favor of it.

VIPS Principal Marilyn Bassett and parent Beth Wulff were present at the meeting. Wulff thanked the board members, saying, “It’s very cool.”
