Maries County Sheriff’s office July activity report corrected after one-call discrepancy

MARIES COUNTY — The Maries County Sheriff’s Office reported responding to 854 calls for service during July, according to its monthly activity summary. However, the report contained a minor mathematical discrepancy.

The report states deputies handled a total of 854 calls during the month. Activity was divided into five major categories: proactive patrol and traffic enforcement, public safety and citizen assistance, criminal investigations and complaints, administrative and judicial support, and emergency and weather response.

When those five category totals are added together, they equal 853 calls rather than the reported total of 854, leaving a one-call difference.

Sheriff Mark Morgan said that he removed one call that was mislabeled as a checkpoint instead of a well-being check and forgot to update the report.

“So I took that off there because if I have checkpoint on there, they’d better be like, ‘When did they do a checkpoint?’ because we didn’t do any checkpoints,” he said.

A review of each category found that every individual category total is mathematically correct.

According to the report, proactive patrol and traffic enforcement accounted for the largest share of deputy activity with 344 calls, including 206 traffic stops, 78 business and area checks, 29 extra patrols, 29 traffic complaints and two vehicle identifications.

Public safety and citizen assistance accounted for 206 calls, led by 78 well-being checks, including 911 hang-up calls, 22 calls for police, 20 phone messages, 19 motorist assists and 15 animal control calls. Accounting for the discrepancy, there were 207 public safety and citizen assistance calls and 79 well-being checks.

Emergency and weather response included 161 calls, consisting primarily of 102 medical emergencies, 27 fire-related responses, 14 motor vehicle accidents, 13 reports of debris in roadways, three animal bite or attack calls and two water rescue or marine incidents.

Criminal investigations and complaints totaled 64 calls, including 22 stealing, fraud or property crime reports, 19 domestic violence, disturbance or assault calls, 13 suspicious activity complaints, four narcotics, driving while intoxicated or intoxicated person investigations, two harassment complaints, two missing person or pursuit incidents, one child abuse investigation and one field interview.

Administrative and judicial support activities totaled 78 calls, including 42 follow-up investigations, 21 paper service calls, 11 prisoner transports, two jail incidents and two keep-the-peace or standby requests.
