VIENNA — Filing closed last week for the April 2 municipal election. Several Vienna-area races ended with only one candidate filing per seat.

Two seats were available on the Vienna City Council for four-year terms. No candidates filed for the South Ward alderman seat currently held by Brenda Davis. The seat will be an open write-in for any eligible person living in the South Ward, which is any place within the city limits south of Highway 42.

Incumbent North Ward Alderman Rita Juergens filed to retain her seat. Anyone else wishing to run for the seat as a write-in candidate must declare with the Maries County Clerk’s Office by Jan. 23.

The Maries-Osage Ambulance District Board of Directors had two sub-district seats available for three-year terms. Incumbent Eileen Smith filed to retain her Sub-District No. 3 seat. As the only candidate to file, she will start a new term in April.

Board member Victor Stratman did not file to retain his Sub-District No. 6 seat. Angie Thompson was the only candidate to file for the seat. She will take office in April.

The Maries R-1 Board of Education had two seats available for three-year terms. Board members Dave Garro and Mike Kleffner did not file to retain their seats. Two candidates, Lori Hayes and Kevin Heavin, filed for the election.

Maries R-1 also has a $2 million bond proposition on the ballot. If approved by voters, Proposition K.I.D.S. would target projects such as safety improvements, ventilation upgrades and boiler replacements.
