Commissioners discuss roadwork, courthouse maintenance

VIENNA — Presiding Commissioner Victor Stratman had reviewed a draft of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) upcoming calendar of highway and bridge construction projects and shared the projected dates at the June 26 commission meeting.

Highway 28 is scheduled to receive pavement resurfacing from Highway 63 in Vichy to Highway 50 in Rosebud. Work is expected to begin in 2024.

MoDOT expects to award a contract in 2025 for bridge improvement on two Highway 42 bridges over Fly Creek and the Maries River.

Another bridge improvement project could have its contract awarded 2025 to upgrade two Route AA bridges over the Maries River and the Little Maries River.

One county project will occur this month. Precision Sealcoating Services LLC will begin sealing Maries Road 325 on July 10. After finishing work on that road, the company will seal Maries Road 339 and Maries Road 340.

Western District Commissioner Ed Fagre said the road crews will resume grading when the weather brings some moisture to the area.

Stratman asked if the other commissioners were still interested in purchasing limiters for the jail showers. Last month’s courthouse water bill was much higher than usual. After a plumber looked around the courthouse, the suspected source of the high water usage was the showers.

“If (the price) isn’t too terribly high,” Fagre said.

He added that inmates leaving water running in the jail had flooded the courthouse in the past.

Stratman clarified that the limiters would be like those found on sinks in public restrooms. It would limit the amount of time the shower ran before automatically ending. Restarting it would only take the push of a button.

A technician will visit the courthouse on July 10 to look at the generator. In February, Stratman mentioned issues with the generator’s starter.
