Chamois cross country runners had a solid race at Saturday’s Gans Creek Classic in Columbia.

“This is our first time at the Gans Creek Classic,” said Coach John Leach. “It was a really good morning to run. Five of the six runners ran the best times in their high school careers. It was a remarkable day and our runners had a great day.”

The boys’ team finished 15 among 24 schools and was the only full Class 1 boys’ team in the race.

Caleb Keilholz earned the only medal for Chamois for his 17th-place run of 17:59. Grayson Gerloff was next, finishing 80th in 19:50, followed by Kaden Wuelling (107, 20:36), Evert Mehmert (113, 20:39), and Bill Kirsch (130, 21:10).

In the girls’ race, Emma Mehmert finished 116th in 24:16.

“This was a great warm up to the district meet and state,” said Leach. “I’m very proud of all the runners.”

On Thursday at Belle, several Chamois runners were close to earning a medal as Keilholz finished third (18:19) to lead the team.

“We were very close in our races,” said Leach. “Caleb’s time was his best-ever and I’m happy with the way he’s running.”

Mehmert crossed in 23rd place (21:33), followed by Wuelling (25, 21:53), and Gerloff (36, 22:46).

In the girls’ race, Mehmert was 21st in 25:39, and Carly Schollmeyer finished 27th in 16:21.
