BELLE — On Sept. 18, the Belle Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter was eager to be up at 7:30 a.m. for a very eventful field trip at Mizzou’s Bradford Research Farm just outside of Columbia.
The Bradford Research Farm is where students get to explore several careers in agriculture and speak with researchers. A total of 54 schools and 1,622 students attended this showcase along with 33 BHS members.
With a wide range of topics from genetically modified plants to tractor equipment, there was no shortage of interesting topics. BHS FFA members even saw a cannulated cow — a cow with a port hole in its side — for the purpose of digestive research. Researchers use this to study the rumen of cattle and nutrition.
Student’s were able to put their hands in the stomach of the cow and feel the contents. “Needless to say the cow was either your favorite part of the trip or least favorite,” said Cash Lacy. “After spending the day at the research farm, we went out to lunch and headed home.”
