VIENNA — Less than one week remains before the 5 p.m. deadline on March 26 to file for the Aug. 6 primary election.

So far, one contested race has emerged at the county level. Candidates Timothy “T.J.” Halle Jr., Scott John and Mark Morgan are running to replace retiring sheriff Chris Heitman.

Four of the other county-level seats have incumbents as the sole candidates one week before the filing deadline. Republican Doug Drewel is running to remain the county commissioner representing the Eastern District. Democrats Ed Fagre, David Martin and Dana Simmons filed for another term in their roles as Western District commissioner, coroner and assessor, respectively.

Public Administrator Carol Jo Schulte has not filed for another term. Democrat Amanda Sandbothe is the only candidate for the seat as of Tuesday.

A handful of people have also filed for spots on the Maries County Republican Committee, which includes spots for a man and a woman in seven townships. Erican Sugg and Debra Havens filed for Jackson Township, Anita Martin filed for Dry Creek Township, Kathryn Amsinger filed for Johnson Township and Denise Davis filed for Spring Creek Township.

Three candidates have filed for the Missouri House of Representatives District 143, which represents Maries County, Texas County and parts of Phelps County. Incumbent Bennie Cook of Houston faces challenger Philip Lohmann of Rolla in the primary. Democrat Bernadette Holzer of Houston is also running for the seat.

Incumbent Judge Bill Hickle is running to remain a circuit judge in the 25th Circuit.

State-level offices on the August primary ballot include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer and attorney general. Congressional races include for the United States Senate and U.S. House District 3. The full list of candidates for those seats will appear in next week’s edition alongside any additional candidates in local races.
