Absentee ballots predict lower voter turnout during Aug. 4 primary

VIENNA — Voter turnout may be less than County Clerk Rhonda Rodgers’ 40 percent prediction, according to absentee ballot numbers reported during the July 20 County Commission meeting.

Rodgers hopes for at least 200-300 absentee ballots during any national midterm election, whether the primary or the general election. However, she has only received 57 absentee votes, including in-person early voting.

Of those totals, 24 have voted in-person early, 30 have been mailed with 14 returned, and three were emailed with one returned.

With Amendment 5 to phase out the state income tax if passed, and the contested races for presiding commissioner and prosecuting attorney, Rodgers thought turnout would be higher.

“I just thought with some of the heated amendments and our local race, people would be more interested, but I don’t think they are,” she said.

Regular early voting opened July 22, at the Maries County Courthouse.

Local polling precincts will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 4, including:

• Belle - St. Alexander’s Catholic Church, 402 W. Third Street

• Brinktown - Guardian Angels Parish Hall, 37515 Hwy. N

• Hayden Heights - Kenner Church, 17996 Maries Road 505, Dixon

• Hodgeville - Vichy Firehouse, 14812 Hwy. 63 S, Vichy

• Mason Ridge - Mason Ridge Community Church, 10784 Hwy. 133, Meta

• Santee - Santee Church, 20174 Hwy. 133, Dixon

• Vichy - Vichy Firehouse, 14812 Hwy. 63 South

• Vienna - Knights of Columbus Hall, 206 6th Street
