Walter E. Nie, 90, of Belle, passed away Friday, June 23, 2023, at the St. James Veteran’s Home.

He was born May 7, 1933, a son to the late Walter Joseph and Talytha Pauline (Woemmel) Nie in Maries County.

Walter was a lifelong area resident and 1951 graduate of Belle High School. Following high school, Walter proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Hammack, June 3, 1956, at the Koenig Methodist Church. Dorothy preceded him in death on June 7, 2019.

In addition to working on the family farm all his life, Walter had been employed at the International Shoe factory for 19 years and at the Belle Post Office for 25 years. He loved farm life and continued to work the farm and raise cattle until 2020.

Walter like to hunt and fish and took several trips to Canada to catch trout and walleye. He enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour books, listening to older country music, as well as listening to the family jam sessions that took place. He took joy in sitting on his porch and visiting with family and friends and aggravating his nieces and nephews. Walter’s best times were spent with his family, and he will be missed greatly by those that knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by parents, Walter and Talytha; wife, Dorothy; and sons-in-law, Rick Massey and Douglas Kit Withouse.

Walter is survived by daughter, Carol Sue (Massey) Withouse; grandchildren, Josh Withouse and wife Robbi, Jeri Nelson and Brenda Wieberg; great-grandchildren, Samantha Salters and Taylor Withouse, Kitley and Kaden Nelson, and Chase Buddemeyer; great-great-grandchild, Sutton; brother, Donald Nie and wife Jane; niece Amy Jones and husband Lucas; nephew, Danny Nie and wife Robin; great-nieces, Mea Jones, Aurora Pfeiffer, and Victoria Pfeiffer; and great-nephew, Dalton Jones; as well as many extended family members and friends.
