VIENNA — The Vienna middle school basketball team traveled to Iberia last week for a winter ball, double header matchup, an offseason contest outside of league play, and returned with a resounding victory. The Eagles cruised past the Dixon Bulldogs 48-13, giving younger players valuable game experience and a chance to test their skills in a competitive setting. The team then played against the middle school Laquey Hornets and won 29-23. However, no stats were taken during the second game per The Advocate’s knowledge.
Middle school captain Drew Crum, who is expected to move up to the VHS JV team next year, led the effort with 7 points and more than 10 rebounds, controlling the paint and setting the tone defensively.
“Winter ball is different from normal, but I’m still gonna go out there and try my hardest,” Crum said. “I’d say the competition of winter ball is a little less competitive, but it’s about getting better.”
Crum had set a personal goal of scoring 30 points in the game, but his focus on teamwork and rebounding helped the Eagles dominate from tipoff to final buzzer.
Contributing to the win was Tanner Hallahan, younger brother of Varsity player Tyler Hallahan, who had a breakout performance with 10 points, showing poise and skill. Alex Wieberg led all scorers with 12 points, who looks to be a natural scorer for the Eagles. Zachary Wansing added 9, with some 3-pointers that drained the net. David Martin and Weston Schwartze each chipped in 4 points, rounding out a balanced offensive attack for VMS Eagles Basketball.
Coached by Chris Wansing, the middle school Eagles demonstrated teamwork, effort and readiness for the next level. Every player contributed in some way, from defensive stops to rebounds to fast-break opportunities, highlighting the depth and promise of Vienna’s program at the younger levels.
