Bryce Gehlert’s Belle Tiger baseball team entered last Monday’s regular-season finale against Vienna’s Eagles at Tiger Field not only looking for Maries County bragging rights but also a six-game winning streak to enter district play.
Trailing 4-2 after three innings, Belle tied it at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before a Luke Rohrer walk-off RBI single scoring Ryder Butler in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the host Tigers a 5-4 victory over Vienna at Tiger Field.
After giving up three runs in the top of the first inning, Belle got one back in the bottom half of th frame when Hank Stratman was hit by a pitch before scoring on a Butler RBI single cutting the Eagle lead to 3-1 after an inning.
Belle had a chance to do damage in the bottom of the second inning behind a walk to Easton Schroeder before Garrett Gehlert reached on an error.
A Stratman single loaded the bases only to see them stay loaded after two consecutive outs ended the inning.
Both teams traded runs in the third inning with Belle scoring theirs on a Cameron Rehmert solo home run over the center field fence.
After scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth innings, the host Tigers used a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull even with the visiting Eagles.
Lathan Miller led the frame off with a walk before Gehlert started a two-out rally with a RBI double scoring Miller to trim Vienna’s lead to 4-3.
Stratman then reached base for the third time in four plate appearances with a RBI double scoring Gehlert to tie the game at 4-4.
Pitching in relief of starter Chase Trainor, Butler pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the top of the seventh inning to give the Tigers a chance to avoid extra innings.
Butler walked to start the bottom of the seventh before Rehmert and Miller were hit by pitches to load the bases for Rohrer who delivered his aforementioned walk-off RBI single helping the Tigers end their regular season on a winning note.
Butler earned the win pitching six innings of relief allowing just one run on eight hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts.
Belle was scheduled to open play in the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 8 Baseball Tournament Monday afternoon at Tiger Field against Cuba’s Wildcats.
