One meet into the season and it appears the Vienna High School cross country teams are going to be serious contenders for post-season qualifications.
Vienna opened its campaign by standing out in its division at the annual Jim Marshall Invitational, held Saturday, Aug. 29 in Jefferson City.
There were three different boys’/girls’ divisions competing on the 3,200-meter course - the Class 1-3 Division, the Class 4-5 Division and the Junior Varsity Division.
Vienna participated in the Class 1-3 Division. There were seven boys’ schools and five girls’ schools that competed in the Class 1-3 Division.
The Eagles won the Class 1-3 boys’ team title with 21 points while Versailles was second with 64.
Vienna had three of the top five boys’ individual finishers, paced by senior medalist Hunter Schwartze, who won the meet with a time of 10:41.49. Also for the Eagles, sophomore Paxten Jeremy finished fourth overall at 12:02.10 and freshman Eli Messersmith fifth at 12:03.97.
Other scorers for the Eagle boys were junior Bryce Ewers, fifth overall at 12:14.78, and freshman Tanner Hallahan, ninth at 12:59.88.
In the girls’ meet Vienna was one of just two schools with a full, five-runner team. Versailles won with 20 points and Vienna was runner-up with 38.
For the Lady Eagles sophomore Sophia Nuebert was fourth overall at 15:18.52 and senior Kaylee Bresnahan also had a top-10 finish, finishing seventh at 17:28.44.
The Eagles are to run again when they host the Vienna Invitational, starting at 4 p.m. Sept. 9.
