VIENNA — The Maries County R-1 Board of Education announced multiple hires and resignations at the May 26 meeting.

Three teachers are leaving, and the district is onboarding six new educators.

Resignations include:

• Elizabeth Driskell, resigning as the school’s band teacher because of the long commute for her and her spouse. She accepted a new position to shorten that commute, but she expressed willingness to help with the transition.

• Michele Campbell announced her resignation as a middle school math teacher to spend more time with her family and their farm. She hopes to remain involved in the district as a substitute teacher.

“I will greatly miss the daily interactions and supportive environment we have shared,” she said in her resignation letter. “The students at Maries R-1 have made a lasting impact on me, and they will be deeply missed as well.”

• Melanie Snodgrass is resigning as a high school English teacher, saying it was best for her family.

The district approved the following employments, including:

• Taniya Corley, of Rolla, to teach middle school math. She graduated from Crowder College in Neosho and coached basketball there. She hopes to coach basketball at Maries R-1 also.

Because she was coaching, she has not finished her teaching certification but will be mentored as she finishes her required hours.

• Janet Roach, of Rolla, will be the new high school English teacher. She has about 25 years of experience, including 19 years in Oklahoma and about five years in Missouri. Roach previously taught both middle and high school English.

• Timothy McNulty and Anna Fink, who will be getting married in July, will be teaching music. McNulty plans to teach elementary music and high school choir while Fink focuses on band. They have been teaching in Indiana the past five years, but Fink is from the Gerald area.

• Jilly Lowry will be Vienna’s new biology teacher, moving from the paraprofessional position. She is currently working on her certification.

• The board also hired Abe Rowden as the assistant softball coach.

In other business, Superintendent Teresa Messersmith updated the board on school facilities projects.

The district is adding filters to every water fountain after reading about concerns in The Advocate regarding the city water supply.

Repairing and resurfacing the track is set to begin June 15, and the district plans to begin repairs on the high school roof June 22 under the 2024 Proposition Kids bond issue.

The district is also waiting for engineering company Archer-Elgin to finish the request for proposal (RFP) for the roof projects under the Proposition Eagles bond issue passed in April.
