Bourbon High School’s volleyball team is battling through a rough patch, but are staying competitive and close to its opponents despite its losses. The Lady Warhawks dropped matches versus Valley and Crystal City earlier in the week before falling in seven out of eight sets in the Sept. 17 Cuba Varsity Volleyball Tournament. Licking won the tournament, Jefferson took second place and Cuba finished in third.
Bourbon’s matches versus Valley and Crystal City along with its games in the Cuba Tournament are detailed below. The Lady Warhawks now have a 3-10-2 record on the season. The Blue and White played road matches in St. James and in Hillsboro against Grandview Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, respectively which will be detailed in next week’s edition. Bourbon will host Steelville Sept. 24 and will compete in the Sept. 26 Principia Round Robin Tournament in St. Louis. The Lady Warhawks are then scheduled to host Plato Sept. 29 and play in Dixon Oct. 1.
Sept. 15 vs. Valley
The Lady Warhawks traveled to Caledonia to take on the Valley Lady Vikings. Bourbon’s junior varsity team took the court first and won a pair of close matches 25-20 and 28-26 to earn the victory and advance to 4-1 on the year.
The Lady Warhawks’ varsity team stayed close to the Lady Vikings in their match up, but didn’t have such luck entering the win column. Bourbon dropped the first set 25-23, Valley controlled the second set with a 25-11 win and the Vikings squeaked out a 25-23 win in the third set to win the match in straight sets.
The Lady Warhawks fell to 3-6-1 on the season with the loss and Valley advanced to 2-3 with the win.
Kenzii Withorn had a team-high seven kills along with three digs and two aces, Allie Sutton had 12 assists and three digs, Halie Kahmke tallied 11 receptions, five aces, four digs and two assists, Lauryn Hercules recorded 10 receptions and five digs, Savanna Vance and Maddie Blanton each had seven receptions and Bree Bouse chipped in six receptions.
Sept. 17 vs. Crystal City
Bourbon welcomed a strong Crystal City Lady Hornets team into town on Thursday. The Lady Warhawks were stung by the Lady Hornets at all levels. Crystal City’s junior varsity team won 25-19 and 25-12 to earn the victory in straight sets in the first match up of the evening.
Bourbon’s varsity team all had their hands full. The Lady Hornets won the first set 25-12 in a commanding win. The Lady Warhawks played their best in the second set, but still eventually fell 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead. Crystal City finished Bourbon off in the third set, winning 25-9 to finish with a perfect night on the road. Bourbon dropped to 3-7-1 and Crystal City advanced to 8-4-1. Statistics weren’t provided for this match up.
Sept. 19 Cuba Varsity Tournament
The Lady Warhawks spent their Saturday competing in four matches from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cuba Varsity Volleyball Tournament. Bourbon played eventual champion Licking first and stayed close despite falling in both sets. Bourbon fell 25-19 and 25-20 to Licking before dropping both sets to Cuba 25-10 and 25-14 in its second match of the day.
The Blue and White earned its lone victory of the afternoon against the St. James Lady Tigers. After losing the first set 25-19 to the Lady Tigers, Bourbon dominated the second set to earn a 25-8 victory.
The Lady Warhawks played second place finisher Jefferson in its final match of the afternoon and lost both sets 25-14 to end its day with a 1-7 set record.
