Lady Eagles turn season corner with win over Laquey

VIENNA — The Lady Eagles basketball team picked up a much-needed confidence boost on Dec. 11 with a dominant 70–28 win over Laquey  3-3), continuing a strong turnaround after an 0–3 start to the season. Since opening the year with three straight losses, the Lady Eagles have found their rhythm, winning three of their last four games to improve their record to 3–4 overall. The victory over Laquey marked another step forward as the team built momentum heading into the final stretch before winter break and kept the teams chances of having a good playoff run, alive.

Vienna set the tone early and never looked back, controlling the pace of the game on both ends of the floor. The Lady Eagles were consistent throughout all four quarters, scoring at least 15 points in each frame and steadily widening the gap as the night went on. Their most dominant stretch came in the third quarter, when the offense clicked and the defense continued to limit Laquey’s scoring opportunities.

Aubrey Schwartze led the way with a strong all-around performance, recording a double-double with 20 points and more than 10 rebounds. She was also efficient at the free-throw line, converting six of her nine attempts. Freshman Alexis Curtis followed with a breakout performance of her own, finishing with 11 points while also pulling down a large number of rebounds to help control the boards.

Balanced scoring played a key role in the win, as multiple players contributed offensively. Ella Hollis and Scarlett Weeks each reached double figures with 10 points apiece, while Liberty Rowden added nine. Delaney Schwartze chipped in five points, Aspyn Gorman scored four, and Macie Rowden added a point from the free-throw line to round out the scoring.

With the lopsided win, the Lady Eagles appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. Coach KC Curler had her own thoughts on her teams performance.

“They played like the team I knew they could be,” Curler said.

They will look to carry that momentum into upcoming matchups against Chamois and Newburg later this week before heading into winter break, where the team will have time to rest and reset before returning to action in the new year. The Vienna Lady Eagles have a chance to have a positive record going into the break.
