Turning back Waynesville and Hartville during their first two games of the Vienna Softball Tournament, Chandler Harker’s Lady Eagles just needed to defeat St. Francis Borgia’s Lady Knights in the final game of the tournament to keep the championship plaque in town.

Falling behind 5-0 after three innings, Vienna was only able to push across one run in the top of the fourth before Borgia answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of their 8-1 victory causing a three-way tie in the tournament.

Borgia, Waynesville and Vienna all finished with 2-1 tournament records which made the head-to-head tiebreaker moot.

Going next to runs allowed, Borgia allowed just eight runs in three games giving them the tournament championship plaque.

Waynesville allowed 10 runs to secure second-place hardware while Vienna settled for third place after allowing 12 runs in three games.

In a 5-0 hole after three innings, Vienna started the top of the fourth inning with an Aubrey Schwartze one-out single.

After a Kayla Hertzing single moved Schwartze to second base, a Madison Weeks RBI single got Vienna on the board for what turned out to be their lone run of the game.

During the top of the fifth, Vienna got a leadoff single from Aubrey Reeves and a one-out walk from Eva Hollis to set up two runners on base with only one out.

Ella Hollis laced a line drive but right to Borgia’s shortstop who then turned an inning-ending double play. Still down 8-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Vienna started a two-out rally with a walk to Marissa Hollis.

Following Weeks’ second single of the game, Jaelee Stricklan flied out to center field ultimately ending the ball game.

Eva Hollis took the loss pitching four innings allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out one batter.

Addi James pitched one inning of scoreless relief and struck out a Lady Knight.

Earlier in the day against Hartville’s Lady Eagles, Vienna got a couple of insurance tallies in the third and fifth innings to hold on for a 6-3 victory.

Scoreless after one inning, Vienna broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the second inning.

Marissa Hollis walked and scored for the first run of the game before Weeks singled and scored later in the inning as part of a Salene George two-RBI single.

George scored the fourth run of the inning on a Eva Hollis RBI single giving the black and gold Eagles a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Hartville had a quick answer in the top of the third inning.

Three hits and a walk led to three runs for the blue and white Eagles cutting Vienna’s lead to 4-3 entering the bottom of the third inning.

Hertzing reached on a fielder’s choice before taking second base on a passed ball.

A Marissa Hollis RBI single scoring Hertzing bumped Vienna’s lead back to two runs at 5-3 after three innings.

Pitching around a pair of walks and a fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth inning, James gave her offense a chance to add to the lead in the bottom half of the fourth.

Retried in order by Hartville in the bottom of the fourth, Vienna saw James return the favor in the top of the fifth by striking out the side.

Ella Hollis led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and took third on a Hartville error.

She later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly from Stricklan giving Vienna their final margin of victory.
