It may be summer jobs, fishing, floating and swimming pools now. But with a little more than a month before the start of fall practice the Vienna High School softball, cross country and fall baseball squads will be gearing up for their respective campaigns very soon.
The first day of practice for the 2026 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) fall sports teams will be Monday, Aug. 10.
Here is a look at Vienna teams:
Softball
Vienna head coach Jess Gibbs will lead the Lady Eagles to the Richland Jamboree Aug. 21. Vienna then is scheduled to open its season by hosting St. James Aug. 27 at the City Park softball field.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 12-10 record while competing in the rugged Show-Me Central Conference.
Gibbs has some promising returners and youngsters to work with this fall, with seniors Ella Hollis and Kaylee Bresnahan among those leading the charge.
However, huge losses to graduation must be addressed, including Belle High co-op shortstop Aubrey Rehmert, who earned Missouri Class 2 All-State honors last fall for the Lady Eagles, and slugger Aubrey Schwartze - both also state champions in track and field this past spring. Rehmert will be playing collegiate softball at Lincoln University in Jefferson City this coming school year.
Cross Country
The Vienna boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are slated to get their respective seasons underway Aug. 29 at the Jim Marshall Invitational in Jefferson City. Next up, the Eagles and Lady Eagles are to host the Vienna Invitational Sept. 9.
Vienna’s boys had a banner season for coach David Martin last fall, winning the SMCC team championship and the district title to reach the Class 1 State Meet as a full team. All-state runners back for the Eagle boys are senior Hunter Schwartze and junior Bryce Ewers. Schwartze finished third individually at the Class 1 State Meet as a junior and will be looking for his fourth consecutive trip to the state meet this fall.
The Lady Eagles won the SMCC championship a year ago and despite a roster with just five runners, Vienna had three Class 1 State Meet qualifiers and all are coming back in sophomore Sophia Neubert, sophomore Kaitlyn Carpenter and Bresnahan.
Baseball
Vienna baseball head coach Tim Simmons has a strong group back after barely missing out on the district championship this past spring, falling to defending Class 1 state champion and league rival St. Elizabeth 1-0 on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning during the District 8 title game. The Eagles were state-ranked at one point last spring and finished the season 12-10.
Among the starters returning are pitcher/infielder Evan Simmons, senior infielder/pitcher Hunter Schwartze, junior infielder/outfielder/catcher Wyatt Wulff, senior outfielder Brett Welshmeyer, senior infielder/outfielder Mason Via and senior infielder Jaiden Hayes.
