Host runners shine at Eagle Invitational

Able to navigate the near-100 degree weather without incident, the host Vienna High School cross country team had a big day at the Vienna Eagle Invitational, held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Vienna City Park.

The host Eagles, behind senior medalist Hunter Schwartze, won the boys’ team championship.

Highlighting the 1.6-mile middle school event, Lady Eagle Emerson Jeremy earned medalist honors to pace the Vienna girls to the team crown.

Vienna won the boys’ high school, 5,000-meter team title with 46 points while Belle took second with 87 and Steelville third with 95. There were eight full teams in the boys’ high school race.

The Eagles won despite a couple of runners saying they weren’t at their best. Schwartze pitched five innings the previous day in a Vienna baseball victory while sophomore Paxten Jeremy said he broke in a new pair of bright orange running shoes during the race. “That was a mistake!” he said.

Despite being a little sore from pitching, Schwartze nonetheless won Wednesday’s race with a time of 18:19.5. Placing second was Dixon’s William Slone with 18:40.9.

Also scoring for the Eagles were junior Bruce Ewers, who was fourth overall at 19:25.5; Jeremy 12th at 20:11.7; freshman Eli Messersmith 13th at 20:20.1, and freshman Alex Wieberg 20th at 21:31.4.

In the girls’ high school race Stover won the team crown with 37 points while New Bloomfield was runner-up with 56, Belle third with 58 and Vienna fourth with 63.

Stover’s Gabriell Sidebottom was the girls’ medalist with 24:33.0. Sophomore Sophia Neubert paced the Lady Eagles by placing fifth overall at 25:40.6.

Vienna is scheduled to compete again in the Steelville Invitational, starting at 4 p.m. Sept. 17.
