While basketball season may be over in Vienna, a pair of Eagle and Lady Eagle basketball players earned postseason recognition in recent voting by the coaches of the Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC).
In boy’s voting, Eagle junior Teagan James was named the SMCC’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while fellow junior Hunter Schwartze was named to the All-SMCC Second Team.
Netting double figures in points during all of Vienna’s games that statistics were available on, James scored a season-high 36 points during their 75-70 loss to Russellville ending the regular season.
Adding 10 rebounds to his season-high point total, James also recorded one of five double doubles on the season.
James’ first double double came during a 55-18 victory over Chamois with 19 points and 11 rebounds. He also dished out a season-high five assists against the Pirates.
During their 77-66 victory over Liberty Christian at the Battle in Bourbon Tournament, James posted his second double double of the season finishing with 28 points and 12 rebounds.
In an 83-69 non-conference victory over Crocker, James posted another double double of 33 points and 11 rebounds.
Near the end of the regular season during an 88-64 win over Crocker, James called blackjack finishing with a double double of 21 points, 10 rebounds, five blocked shots, four steals and three assists.
Scoring at least 20 points in 21 games, James led the Eagles in scoring averaging 24 points per game.
He also led the team with 6.4 rebounds per contest.
“Teagan had a great season and was well deserving of being the MVP of the (Show-Me Central) conference this year,” Eagle head basketball coach Chandler Harker said. “He has progressed well at being a more rounded offensive threat being able to score from all three levels.
During SMCC play, James also led the conference averaging 23.8 points per game.
Named to the All-SMCC second team, Schwartze joined James averaging double figures in scoring at 10.5 points per game.
He also led the Eagles averaging 4.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game.
Reaching double digits in the scoring column during 15 contests, Schwartze posted a season-high 28 points during Vienna’s second win over Crocker in mid-February.
On the glass, Schwartze grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds during a 66-45 loss to the host Bulldogs at the South Callaway Boys Basketball Tournament back in mid-January.
Schwartze’s lone double double of the season came against Tuscumbia in SMCC play with him racking up 16 points, 10 steals and six assists.
Aside from a 20-point effort against Prairie Home, Schwartze amassed at least 10 points in 13 other basketball games for the Eagles.
“Hunter stepped up in big ways for our team this season,” Harker said. “He was the engine for our team. He progressed well throughout the year leading our team running the point guard position. He also led our team in assists, steals and was second in scoring.”
Finishing in a three-way tie for second place in the SMCC with Calvary Lutheran and Jamestown, Vienna finished behind SMCC champion St. Elizabeth with an overall record of 12-15 while going 5-2 in the SMCC.
All-SMCC First Team selections along with James included Tuscumbia senior Damon Whittle, Calvary Lutheran senior Edmund Brooks, St. Elizabeth junior Kyson Green, Tuscumbia sophomore Cayden Patterson and Prairie Home senior Carter Pethan.
Joining Schwartze on the All-SMCC Second Team were Chamois senior Jaxon Wuelling, Jamestown senior Ethan Schoenthal, Calvary Lutheran junior Braylon Schulte, St. Elizabeth sophomore Ben Engelmeyer, Chamois sophomore Brayden Cotton, Tuscumbia sophomore Alton Tellman, Jamestown sophomore Tristan Schoenthal, Calvary Lutheran junior Will Kuhlmann and St. Elizabeth senior Carter Reinkemeyer.
KC Curler’s Vienna Lady Eagles finished their season with a 16-11 overall record while going 5-2 to place third in the SMCC behind St. Elizabeth (7-0) and Tuscumbia (6-1).
Named to the All-SMCC First Team, senior Aubrey Schwartze led the Lady Eagles averaging a double double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
She also led the team averaging three blocked shots a game.
“Aubrey is a very talented and versatile player who can impact the game from anywhere on the floor,” Curler said. “She can score inside, shoot from the outside and help bring the ball up the court when needed.
Joining Schwartze on the All-SMCC First Team was St. Elizabeth senior Reagan Wobbe (MVP), Jamestown senior Sydney Derendinger, Calvary Lutheran sophomore Kylie Robinson, Bunceton senior Addison Ray and Tuscumbia junior Tatum Hawken.
Junior Ella Hollis was named to the All-SMCC Second Team averaging 15 points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds per game.
Hollis led the Lady Eagles in steals and assists.
“Ella showed tremendous growth this season and is a key leader for our team,” Curler said. “She developed a strong outside shot to go along with her ability to drive hard to the basket making her a tough players for opposing teams to stop.”
Joining Hollis on the All-SMCC Second Team were Prairie Home senior Jordyn Alpers, St. Elizabeth sophomore Kinley Kemna, Jamestown sophomore Ada Cassil, Bunceton senior Daisie Huth, St. Elizabeth senior Charli Duemmel, Calvary Lutheran junior Alayna Sprengel, Jamestown junior Rylee Hirschvogel, Calvary Lutheran junior Sydney Volmert and Prairie Home senior Ava Marcum.
All-SMCC Honorable Mention selections included Chamois senior Savannah Seig, Tuscumbia senior Leila Wright and Tuscumbia senior Maddie Blankenship.
