The Vienna High track team will have a large representation this week at the Missouri Class 1 State Championships following a strong showing at the rain-delayed Section 1 Meet, held Saturday, May 16 at South Callaway High School in Mokane.

The top four finishers in each event at the sectional contest advanced to the Missouri Class 1 State Championships, to be held Friday and Saturday, May 22-23 at Adkins Stadium on the campus of Jefferson City High School.

The Vienna boys are sending nine athletes in nine events while the Lady Eagles qualified two in two events to Jefferson City.

There was a rain delay of around an hour and a half at Section 1, but once the meet began the course conditions were in excellent shape and it continued seemingly without a hitch.

Leading the way for Vienna was junior Hunter Schwartze, who qualified for state in all four of his events.

Vienna brought home three individual sectional championships, as senior Aubrey Schwartze won the girls’ shot put at 36-4 while sophomore Kevin Russell captured both the high jump at 5-11 ½ and the long jump at 22-5 3/4.

Also for the Eagle boys:

Second places came from sophomore Talan Reeves in the triple jump at 41-0 1/4 and the 4x800-meter relay squad of sophomore Bryce Ewers, senior Troy Wulff, freshman Paxten Jeremy and H. Schwartze with a time of 8:42.89.

Vienna third places were by the 4x100-meter relay squad of Schwartze, sophomore Ethan LeStarge, Reeves and Russell at :46.15.

Eagle fourth places came from Schwartze in both the 800-meter run at 2:05.98 and the 3,200-meter run at 11:15.94; freshman Cooper Kleffner in the pole vault at 7-11 ½, and senior Eli Crum in the discus at 128-10.

For the Lady Eagles, in addition to A. Schwartze Vienna is sending freshman Liberty Rowden, who placed third in the javelin at 107-0.

Returning to the state meet after earning all-state honors last year are A. Schwartze in the girls’ shot put and Russell in the boys’ long jump.

There were 24 schools which participated in both the boys’ and girls’ sectional divisions. In the boys’ division Vienna had the fifth-most points with 35 while St. Vincent led the field with 77. The Lady Eagles tied for 21th with four points, while St. Vincent paced the girls field with 66 points.
