Eagles ranked No. 6 in Class 1 baseball state poll

The Vienna High baseball team is state-ranked in Missouri Class 1 in the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association state poll, as the poll was released Monday, April 6.

The Vienna Eagles were ranked No. 6 in Class 1 last week.

Also in Class 1, St. Elizabeth was ranked No. 1, Northland Christian No. 2, Atlanta No. 3, Norwood No. 4, Rock Port No. 5, North Shelby No. 7, Cooter No. 8, Oran No. 9 and Wheaton No. 10.

Among Class 2 schools, Russellville was ranked No. 8 and Eugene No. 10. In Class 3, Licking was ranked No. 2, Blair Oaks No. 3 and Fatima No. 6.

Vienna had a rugged stretch last week against some larger schools and strong small schools in going 1-4 to fall to 6-5 overall.

Last week the Eagles lost at Sullivan 15-9 Monday, April 6; defeated Calvary Lutheran at home 6-1 Thursday, April 9, then went 0-3 against rough competition in the WOW Wooden Bat Tournament Friday and Saturday at Odessa and St. Joseph. In the wood bat event the Eagles lost to Plaza Heights Sr. Baseball Academy 1-0, fell to West Platte 8-4 and lost to Rock Port 6-2. Those three teams have a combined record of 26-6.

This week Vienna was scheduled to play at Crocker Wednesday and at St. James Friday.

WOW Wood Bat Tourney

April 10-11

Plaza Heights 1, Vienna 0: The game was a scoreless tie before Plaza Heights scored the lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vienna was outhit 6-3. It was a hard-luck pitching loss for Troy Wulff, who allowed six hits and three walks over six innings while fanning five. Hunter Schwartze, Mason Via and Dylan Long had the hits for the Eagles.

West Platte 8, Vienna 4: In the second inning West Platte got two runs in the top half and Vienna one in the bottom. West Platte pulled away with two more in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Eagles tightened things with a three-run fifth but could not get any closer. West Platte outhit the Eagles 6-4. T. Wulff had a double and run scored while Long, Jaiden Hayes and Via each had a hit and RBI. Evan Simmons started on the mound and worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and seven walks. Schwartze finished up on the mound.

Rock Port 6, Vienna 2: After two scoreless innings, state-ranked Rock Port plated three runs in the bottom of the third. Vienna would get a run in the top of the sixth but Rock Port got three more runs in the bottom half. Vienna added its final run in the seventh. Vienna outhit Rock Port 9-8. Hayes had two hits and scored a run for the Eagles while Ace Helton doubled; Brett Welschmeyer had a hit and run, and Schwartze, T. Wulff, Reid Nichols, and Long and Via had hits. Nichols went the distance on the mound, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and three walks while fanning five.

 

April 9 - Vienna 6, Calvary Lutheran 1: After starting pitcher Simmons escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam by giving up just one run in the top of the first inning, the Eagles soared to victory. Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Vienna took the lead for good with a two-run bottom of the second. The Eagles added two more runs in the third and single runs in the fifth and sixth. Vienna outhit Calvary Lutheran 10-3. T. Wulff had two doubles and a single for the Eagles while Hayes had two hits and three RBI; Via two hits, an RBI and two runs; Simmons a hit and run, and Welschmeyer and Long a hit and run each. The Eagles swiped eight bases - two each by Caden Kelley and Long. Simmons threw 1 2/3 innings - allowing one hit, one walk and striking out four - before Schwartze tossed three innings, walking none and fanning seven. Wyatt Wulff hurled the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out four. In all, Vienna pitches fanned 15 and walked just one.

 

April 6 - Sullivan 15, Vienna 9: In an all-Eagle slugfest against perennial Class 3 Four Rivers Conference power Sullivan, Vienna charged out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to see Sullivan get three back in the bottom of the fame. After Vienna regained its five-run edge with two in the second, Sullivan pulled away, plating six runs in the second, two in the third, one each in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth. Sullivan outhit Vienna 13-7. There were a total of seven fielding errors in the contest. Welschmeyer had two hits and scored twice for Vienna while Via had a hit, two RBI an two runs; W. Wulff a hit and two RBI; Schwartze a hit, run and RBI; T. Wulff a double and two runs, and Nichols a hit. Nichols, Schwartze and Long pitched two innings each.
