The Vienna High baseball squad ended the regular season last week with a pair of tough-luck losses to teams highly respected in the Class 3 District 8 Tourney.
The Eagles fell on the road to Maries County rival Belle in walk-off fashion, 5-4, Monday, May 11 and traveled to Dixon and lost 10-8 Tuesday, May 12.
Weather permitting, the Eagles are to begin play in the Class 1 District 8 Tournament at Stoutland.
Vienna enters the postseason 11-9.
Defending state champion St. Elizabeth is the top-seeded squad while Vienna is seeded No. 2, Calvary Lutheran No. 3, Stoutland No. 4, Macks Creek No. 5 and Climax Springs No. 6. St. Elizabeth and Vienna got first-round byes.
In the first round Monday, May 18 host Stoutland was to play Macks Creek at 4:30 p.m. while Calvary Lutheran faces Climax Springs at 6 p.m.
In semifinal games Tuesday, May 19, St. Elizabeth was to play the Stoutland/Macks Creek winner at 4:30 p.m. and Vienna takes on the Calvary Lutheran/Climax Springs winner at 6 p.m.
The district championship game is slated for 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20.
The District 8 champion is to play the District 7 champion Monday, May 25 in sectional playoff action at a location to be determined. Schools in District 7 included Northwest Hughesville, New Franklin, Sweet Springs, Pilot Grove, Ottersville and Glasgow.
May 12 - Dixon 10, Vienna 8: Third-seeded Dixon shut out Steelville 6-0 in its first-round district game Saturday, May 16 to improve to 16-8.
In the regular-season finale, the Vienna Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first frame. Dixon took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, but Vienna regained the edge with a three-run top of the third.
The Dixon Bulldogs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth in the see-saw affair. Vienna got three runs in the fourth, with the Bulldogs putting up two runs in their half of the fourth. The Eagles would get one more run in the sixth before falling short. Vienna outhit Dixon 11-7.
Wyatt Wulff had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, five RBI and two stolen bases.
Also for the Eagles, Brett Welschmeyer had a double, single and run, and Hunter Schwartze, Jaiden Hayes, Troy Wulff, Reid Nichols and Dylan Long each had a hit. Vienna stole nine bases - three by Parker James.
Evan Simmons, Mason Via, Hayes and T. Wulff all pitched.
Dixon won the junior varsity game 8-1.
May 11 - Belle 5, Vienna 4: The Belle Tigers, the top-seeded team in District 8, was tied 4-4 with Vienna entering the bottom of the seventh inning last week. Ryder Butler led off with a walk and Cameron Rehmert was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Lathan Miller was also hit by a pitch to allow Belle to load the bases with one out. Luke Rohrer then drew a walk to force in the winning run for the Tigers.
The Eagles started fast, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Belle got a run in the bottom of the first and each team got a run in the third frame. Vienna took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Belle plated two runs to tie things up.
The Eagles outhit the Tigers 11-8.
Nichols had three hits and an RBI for Vienna while T. Wulff had a double, single, two RBI and two runs; Schwartze two hits and a run; Via a double and single; Long a hit and RBI, and W. Wulff a hit.
Nichols, Schwartze and Evan Simmons all pitched for the Eagles.
