The Vienna High baseball squad finally gave up some runs last week, but the Eagles kept their record perfect nonetheless.
After opening the season the previous week with shutout wins over Dixon and Stoutland, the Eagles hit the road to outscore Calvary Lutheran 14-8 Tuesday, Sept. 8, running their record to 3-0. Vienna also won the junior varsity game 4-3.
This week the Eagles were slated to host Iberia Monday, play at Richland Thursday (5 p.m.) and play at Prairie Home Friday.
Sept. 8 - Vienna 14, Calvary Lutheran 8: After plating five runs over the first four innings, the Eagles put things away by reeling off nine runs over the next two frames to come from behind. Calvary Lutheran had eight runs into the fifth inning to take the early lead.
Vienna erupted for 18 hits.
Senior Evan Simmons had a double, two singles and four RBI for the Eagles while senior Mason Via had a hit, drove in four runs and scored four runs; senior Hunter Schwartze three hits, three runs and an RBI; senior Jaiden Hayes three hits and two runs; junior Wyatt Wulff a triple, single, three RBI and a run; sophomore Parker James two hits and three runs; senior Brett Welschmeyer two hits and a run, and sophomore Paxten Jeremy two hits.
Schwartze was the starting pitcher, working 4 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. Hayes got the win in relief, allowing no hits and two walks over 2 1/3 frames.
