Eagle baseball 2-1   in games last week

After posting a couple of blowout, non-conference victories, the Vienna High baseball team dropped a tough slugfest at Jamestown, 12-10, in a Show-Me Central Conference showdown Thursday, April 23.

Earlier in the week in contests against Frisco League competition, the Eagles blasted Laquey on the road 19-1 Monday, April 20 and also ten-runned Stoutland 11-1 at the Vienna City Park Field Tuesday, April 21.

Vienna enters this week with 9-6 overall and 2-2 SMCC marks. This week the Eagles were slated to host Eugene Monday and, in a make-up game, play at Crocker Friday.

April 23 - Jamestown 12, Vienna 10: In a battle of the Eagles, things got off to a great start for the Vienna Eagles, who plated five runs in the top of the first inning. It was 8-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, as Vienna got a run in the third and two in the top of the fourth.

However, Jamestown, 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the league, got its offense rolling, erupting for five runs in the bottom of the fourth and taking the lead for good with a seven-run fifth frame. Vienna would close the gap by getting two runs in the sixth, but could not get any closer.

Vienna outhit Jamestown 11-7. The two teams combined for five fielding errors - three by Jamestown.

Senior Troy Wulff blasted a homer, double and drove in three runs for Vienna while junior Jaiden Hayes was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and scored a run; junior Hunter Schwartze had a double, single and scored twice; sophomore Wyatt Wulff two hits and an RBI; junior Mason Via a hit, RBI and two runs; junior Brett Welschmeyer a hit, RBI and run; senior Reid Nichols scored twice, and senior Dylan Long scored a run. Vienna stole six bases - three by Schwartze.

Junior Evan Simmons started on the mound for Vienna, working four innings and allowing five earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Schwartze, Hayes and T. Wulff all pitched in relief.

April 21 - Vienna 11, Stoutland 1:The Stoutland Tigers struck first, getting a run in the top of the first inning. However, it was all Eagles the next four innings, as the Tiger pitching staff struggled finding the plate.

Vienna loaded the bases in each of the second, third and fourth innings, taking the lead for keeps with four runs in the bottom of the second frame. The Eagles would add two more runs in the third, three in the fourth and ended it on the 10-run rule with two runs in the fifth. The final run came when Schwartze bunted, and on the play Paxten Jeremy scored, making it 11-1.

The Eagles outhit Stoutland 8-4 and were issued 12 walks. And Vienna ran wild on the bases, swiping 11.

Nichols went the distance on the mound, scattering four hits over five innings while walking none and fanning seven.

Schwartze had two hits and three RBI while Long had two hits, an RBI and scored three times; Via two hits and score three times; T. Wulff had a hit and two RBI; Nichols a hit, and Welschmeyer two RBI and two runs.

Long and Via each stole three bases while T. Wulff stole two and Welschmeyer, Schwartze and Jeremy one each.

Vienna won the junior varsity game 4-1.

April 20 - Vienna 19, Laquey 1: Vienna blew out the Laquey Hornets in five innings, scoring in every frame. The Eagles got two runs in the top of the first inning, four in the second, six in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Laquey got its lone run in the fourth.

Vienna outhit Laquey 9-5 and took advantage of 12 walks and eight Hornet fielding errors.

The Eagles used 17 players in the game.

T. Wulff had a homer, single, four RBI and scored three times for the Eagles while freshman Noah Massman had two hits, a run and three RBI; Jeremy a hit and three RBI, and Schwartze, Via, Nichols and senior Caden Kelley a hit each.

Hayes and W. Wulff pitched for the Eagles, Hayes starting and going two innings and allowing a hit and no walks. W. Wulff threw three innings, allowing four hits and a walk while fanning four.
