Dixon Amish community dismantles Belle City Park grandstands

An Amish community from Dixon dismantled the grandstand on Feb. 11 at Belle City Park free of charge in exchange for keeping the wood boards. The group plans to return for the concrete blocks soon. Park Board President Jimmy Zumwalt said the grandstands were not in good shape. Standing water and black mold in the ticket booths beneath the stands caused volunteers to be reluctant to use the space. Overhead structural beams were going to be a safety issue soon. Zumwalt said the park needs to make new seating arrangements, but the old stand had to come down first. He estimates May 1 to be the completion date for the grandstand’s removal and rock added to the site. The entire project will be completed with volunteer work by community members, Zumwalt said. The next step in the project will be pouring a concrete pad and adding an overhang for shade so visitors may bring their own chairs. Portable bleachers may be added at a later date.
