One day removed from a 14-4 season-opening loss in five innings against South Callaway’s Bulldogs in Mokane, Bryce Gehlert’s Belle Tiger baseball team went back on the road Friday night to Washington taking on St. Francis Borgia’s Knights.

Tied at 6-6 after seven innings of regulation high school baseball, the game remained deadlocked at 6-6 until the top of the 10th inning.

Chase Trainor and Ryder Butler started the frame with consecutive singles before Lathan Miller reached on a fielder’s choice in which Trainor was retired at third base.

Cooper Durbin then singled to load the bases for Garrett Gehlert with two outs.

Wasting no time, Gehlert laced the first pitch he saw into right field for a two-RBI single scoring Butler and Miller.

Pitching the final five and two-thirds innings in relief of Butler, Cameron Rehmert pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th inning before retiring the next three Borgia batters giving the Tigers an 8-6 extra-inning road win over the host Knights.

“This was a huge win for us after a tough game against South Callaway the night before,” Gehlert said. “Our guys kept battling and we were finally able to string together some hits and get the big one in the top of the 10th inning.”

Belle drew first blood in the top of the first inning when leadoff hitter Gage Terrill singled and scored on a Hank Stratman RBI double after Gehlert recorded a single of his own.

Gehlert and Stratman both scored on RBI sacrifice flies from Rehmert and Luke Rohrer giving the visiting Tigers an early 3-0 lead before Borgia’s first turn at the plate in the bottom of the first inning.

Pitching around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, Butler kept the Knights off the scoreboard.

Following a scoreless second inning, Belle added to their lead in the top of the third inning when Gehlert singled and scored on a Stratman RBI single bumping the Tiger lead to 4-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.

Turning a hit, two walks and an error in to three runs, Borgia cut Belle’s lead to 4-3 after three frames.

Borgia then tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning before taking a 6-4 lead after two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Belle’s bottom half of the order came through in the top of the sixth inning.

Trainor started the frame with a leadoff walk before a balk moved him to second base.

A Butler single then moved Trainor to third base.

During Lathan Miller’s sixth-inning plate appearance, Butler stole second before he walked to load the bases with one out for Terrill.

Terrill then delivered a two-RBI single to left field knotting the game at 6-6 where it stayed until the aforementioned top of the 10th inning.

Rehmert earned the win in relief of Butler pitching the final five and two-third innings allowing one run on five hits and three walks to go with two strikeouts.

Stratman and Gehlert both showed the way for the Tiger offense with three hits and two runs batted in (RBI) apiece.

Terrill, Butler and Miller also had multi-hit games with two apiece.

Butler and Gehlert each scored a pair of runs.

Tigers at South Callaway

Opening their season last Thursday night against South Callaway’s Bulldogs, Belle led 2-1 in Mokane after two innings before the visiting Tigers saw South Callaway plate 13 of the next 15 runs in the game leaving Belle on the wrong end of a 14-4 final score in five innings.

Gehlert walked and scored in the top of the first inning on a Rehmert RBI single.

Rehmert then scored after Butler drew a bases-loaded walk after Trainor and Rohrer also reached on a walk and hit by pitch respectively to load the bases.

Trailing 6-2 entering the top of the fifth inning, Belle cut South Callaway’s lead in half with two runs on two hits, a walk and an error.

Rehmert doubled to lead off the top of the fifth before scoring when Butler reached on an error.

Butler later scored with two outs on a Durbin RBI single for Belle’s final run of the game.

Gehlert took the loss pitching four innings while allowing six unearned runs on five hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.

Rehmert and Durbin each had a pair of hits and a RBI while Terrill had Belle’s fifth and final hit for the Tigers.

On the road at Sullivan Monday night, Belle will cap their season-opening stretch of six consecutive road games tomorrow (Thursday) at Viburnum and on Saturday with a pair of games in Russellville against Skyline and the host Indians.

Belle will make their Tiger Field debut on Tuesday, March 31 hosting Iberia’s Rangers.
