Depth fuels VHS Eagles during three game stretch

VIENNA — A packed week of games tested the VHS varsity boys basketball team, and the Eagles responded with two victories in three outings to move their season record to 11-13 as postseason play approaches.

Vienna opened the stretch Feb. 9 with a commanding 92-16 win over Bunceton, a matchup that quickly turned into an opportunity to showcase the program’s depth. With the game decided early, extended minutes went to players throughout the bench, allowing younger and reserve athletes valuable varsity experience while maintaining the team’s pace on both ends of the floor.

Head coach Chandler Harker said performances such as this highlight the importance of contributions beyond the starting lineup.

“Role players are just as important as the people that start the game,” Harker said. “Anytime you put somebody in the game, that means something and you expect something to happen. We went several deep into the bench, and while everybody’s role might be a little bit different, as long as everybody does their job, good things happen.”

The Eagles carried that momentum into the following night on Feb. 10, earning a 78-55 victory over Tuscumbia behind balanced scoring and consistent offensive execution. Vienna spread the floor effectively and found production from multiple players throughout the lineup.

Teagan James led the effort with 24 points, while Hunter Schwartze and Talan Reeves each added 16. Jude Stricklan finished with eight points, Dylan Long contributed five, Eli Crum scored four, Bryce Ewers added three and Wyatt Wulff chipped in two points as the Eagles controlled the tempo for much of the contest.

The week concluded Feb. 13 with a conference matchup against St. Elizabeth. Despite a competitive effort, Vienna fell 55-47 as the Hornets capitalized late to secure the win. James again led the Eagles with 20 points, while Schwartze and Long each scored 10. Crum added four points, and Stricklan and Jayce Bertoni each finished with two.

While the loss halted any winning streak, the three-game stretch reflected continued growth for a Vienna squad that has relied on improved scoring balance and increased contributions throughout the roster during the second half of the season.

With the regular season entering its final weeks, the Eagles now turn their attention to a pair of home contests, hosting Crocker on Feb. 17 before welcoming Russellville the following evening on Feb. 18, inside the Allen Gymnasium.
