Already with three wins in their back pocket, Bland’s Lady Bear and Bear basketball teams went for a clean sweep of a season-ending quadrupleheader last Tuesday night at Bland Middle School against New Bloomfield’s Lady Wildcats and Wildcats.
Trailing the vast majority of the first half, Bland’s ‘A’ Bears did not have a lead until Jackson Prater hit a free throw with 1:09 for the first half giving the Bears a 22-21 lead.
Down 31-28 with 3:33 for the third quarter, a Prater free throw 13 seconds later ignited a 16-2 second-half run helping Bland complete the sweep with a 44-33 victory.
Prater led the Bears with a double double of 23 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Owen Dobson nearly joined the double double club finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Alden Zabel added five points and four rebounds while Dakota Stockton added three points and eight rebounds.
Bears also on Bland’s ‘A’ team include Merek Nevills, Chase Sellers, Jaseton Rodgers, Weston Sadler, Kamdyn Struemph and Karsen Ridenhour.
In a two-quarter game, Bland’s ‘B’ Bears posted a 14-0 shutout of New Bloomfield behind seven points and four rebounds and Struemph.
Garit Trainor, Spurling Hendrix and Nevills each added two points.
Rodgers also added a free throw for one point.
Bears rounding out the ‘B’ team roster include Barrett Zumwalt, Hunter Boyer, Ayce Saebens, Adam McCluggage and Buck Strunk.
Prior to the start of the boys portion of the quadrupleheader, Bland’s ‘B’ Lady Bears played a two-quarter contest of their own.
Breaking open a 6-4 game at halftime, Bland outscored New Bloomfield 16-2 in the second half of their 22-6 victory.
Madelyn Lange and Shae Buechter each had 10 points for the Lady Bears while Makenna Norris also had two points.
Lange also had seven rebounds and two steals while Buechter added three steals to her 10 points.
Opening the quadrupleheader with a full ‘A’ team game, the Lady Bears overcame a 16-11 third-quarter deficit with a 16-5 run helping them to an eventual 38-23 victory.
Reagan Gehlert led a balanced Lady Bear scoring attack with nine points followed by eight points each out of Emilyn Lewis and Lange.
Riley Gehlert was next with five points, six rebounds and five steals.
Charleigh Elrod added four points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Emrie Fredendall and Buechter rounded out the Bland scoring with two points apiece.
Kali Mayfield was also on the roster for the Lady Bears.
