Bland’s Bears capture track team title at Vienna Eagle Classic

VIENNA — Beat Newburg.

That was the sole focus for Samantha Eads’ Bland Bear track team entering the boys 4x400-meter relay during Monday’s Vienna Middle School (VMS) Eagle Classic at Vienna High School.

Nursing a 1.5 lead over Newburg’s Wolves entering the final event, Bland simply had to finish ahead of them to secure a team title.

Up to the task, Bland’s boys 4x400m relay team of Brice Robertson, Coltin Hazelwood, David Skaggs and Kelhen Struemph finished second in a time of 4:31.30 ahead of third-place Newburg.

Bland’s 110.5 team points topped the 10-team field which included Newburg (107), Vienna 93.5), Jamestown (87), Plato (59), St. George (49.5), Crocker (32.5), Richland (25), Iberia (18) and Dixon (11).

Vienna’s Eagle quartet of Hunter Schwartze, Kevin Russell, Talan Reeves and Zeb Wiles won the event with a first-place time of 4:28.78.

Vienna’s Ethan LaStarge scored team points for the Eagles with a sixth-place time of 13.96 in the boys 100m dash.

Malachi Fredendall (5th, 28.70) and Miles Frey (6th, 29.18) added five team points for the Bears with their finishes in the boys 200m dash.

Eagle seventh-grader Kevin Russell won the boys 400m dash in a time of 1:00.20 with a duo of Bears also in the top eight and scoring position.

Fredendall (3rd, 1:07.58) and Robertson (5th, 1:08.50) added to Bland’s point total.

Schwartze added to his leg of the 4x400m relay with a winning time of 2:21.67 in the boys 800m run.

Struemph (2nd, 2:36.40) and Skaggs (3rd, 2:37.91) made it three Maries County runners at the front of the pack in the 800.

Making a big move over the last 200 meters, Robertson won the boys 1200m run for Bland in a time of 4:17.45 while Hazelwood also scored for the Bears with a fifth-place time of 4:26.38.

Vienna’s Dalton Timm scored team points for the Eagles in the boys 75m hurdles with a sixth-place time of 16.15.

Sprinting to a fourth-place time of 1:01.18 was the Bear 4x100m relay team of Weston Doss, Trevor Frey, Connor Leroux and Braden Barzee.

Vienna’s Eagle 4x100m relay team of Zac Kleffner, Greyson Summerfold, Jason Hoelscher and Ben Murray placed seventh in a time of 1:08.29.

Zeb Wiles, Kleffner, Summerfold and Reeves took fifth for Vienna in the boys 4x200m relay in a time of 2:08.78.

Bland’s Bear 4x200m foursome of Karsin Siefert, Lathan Miller, Barzee and Leroux took seventh in 2:12.20.

Taking first in the boys 4x800m relay in a time of 10:42.94 was the Bear quartet of Fredendall, Skaggs, Struemph and Miles Frey.

Vienna’s Eagle 4x800m relay team of Tyler Hallahan, Bryce Ewers, Timm and Murray placed third in 12:55.15.

Barzee (10.72m) and Doss (8.65m) placed third and fifth for Bland in the boys shot put.

In the boys discus, Barzee (2nd, 31.84m) and Doss (7th, 22.15m) also scored team points for Bland.

Jordan Hatfield also took fifth place for Vienna with a toss of 24.55m in the boys discus.

Robertson cleared 1.52m in the boys high jump to win it for Bland while Vienna’s Kevin Russel took second also clearing 1.52m with the tie broken based on misses at previous heights.

Russell topped the field for Vienna in the boys long jump with a winning leap of 5.11m.

Schwartze made it a sweep for Vienna in the jumping events with a first-place mark of 9.96m in the boys triple jump.

Iberia topped the girls team standings with 106 points followed by Jamestown (96.5), Vienna (93), Bland (68.5), Crocker (46.5), St. George (44), Plato (36.5), Richland (32), Newburg (31) and Dixon (19).

Vienna’s Lainey Magner won the girls 100m dash in 13.45 while Lady Eagle teammate Ava Smith placed fourth in 14.09.

Bland’s Piper Marsee scored team points with a fifth-place time of 14.28 in the girls 100m dash.

Magner (29.79) and Marsee (29.82) placed second and third respectively in the girls 200m dash.

Ellie Gray also scored team points for Bland with a sixth-place time of 31.46.

Brooke Campbell led Vienna in the girls 400m dash with a second-place time of 1:12.83.

Bland’s duo of Natalie Lansford (1:13.64) and Gray (1:14.09) placed fifth and sixth respectively.

Nolie Finnegan won the girls 800m run for Bland in a time of 2:52.84 with Sophia Neubert (7th, 3:12.71) and Magner (8th, 3:14.19) also scoring team points for Vienna.

Finnegan swept the distance events winning the 1200m run in a time of 4:39.37.

Zoey Marsee also picked team points for Bland with a fourth-place time of 4:53.46.

Kaylee Bresnahan also took fifth for Vienna with a time of 5:03.38 in the girls 1200m run.

Adding to her win in the girls 100m dash, Magner won the 75m hurdles in a time of 13.83.

Lansford also placed sixth for Bland in a time of 15.16.

Sprinting to fifth place in 1:05.87 during the girls 4x100m relay were Vienna’s team of Delaney Schwartze, Rebecca Miller, Aspen Gorman and Lilly Williams.

Bland’s girls 4x100m quartet of Kyrie Rhoads, Temperance Bray, Kaylee Hazelwood and Zoey Marsee placed seventh in 1:10.04.

Vienna’s girls 4x800m relay team of Zoe Hawk, Riley McKinnon, Kaitlyn Carpenter and Neubert placed second in 14:58.35.

Kaylee Hazelwood threw her way to a sixth-place mark of 7.31m for Bland in the girls shot put.

Bresnahan won the girls pole vault clearing 2.13m while Magner took the long jump for Vienna with a leap of 4.23m.
