Bland to celebrate America’s 250th with fireworks, music, family activities

BLAND — Residents from across the area are invited to gather at Bland City Park on Saturday, June 27, for a community celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary.

The “Celebrating 250 Years of America Spectacular Fireworks Show” will feature live music, food, vendors and a fireworks display after dark. Admission is free, making the event an opportunity for families and community members to spend the day together while celebrating the nation’s milestone birthday.

For Bland City Clerk Tesa Koch, the celebration is about more than entertainment.

“Hosting such a milestone celebration brings residents, families and neighbors together to honor shared history and small-town traditions,” Koch said. “It allows us to pass down these small-town traditions, values, and history to the next generation, ensuring that the hardworking spirit that built this community continues to thrive.”

Activities will begin at noon and will be operated by members of the Bland Police Department and Bland Fire Department, who are partnering to raise money for the community’s Shop With a Hero program. The program provides assistance to local children in need during the holiday season, helping ensure area youth have a brighter Christmas.

A variety of food options will be available throughout the day, including fish sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and funnel cakes. Organizers are encouraging attendees to come hungry and support the fundraising effort, with every purchase helping to benefit local children through the Shop With a Hero program.

Koch said the fundraiser reflects the larger purpose of the event by turning a community gathering into direct support for local families.

“The Shop with a Hero fundraiser ties directly into the heart of this community event by transforming a day of gathering into a safety net for our local children,” Koch said. “Every dollar raised from the menu goes straight into this program and directly funds the long-term goal of supporting children in need.”

She added that the event also creates opportunities for positive interactions between residents and first responders.

“Seeing local police officers and firefighters stepping up to flip burgers and serve food allows the community, especially children, to interact with emergency responders in a relaxed and approachable environment,” Koch said. “By coming out to enjoy a meal at the park, neighbors aren’t just buying lunch — they are directly funding a cycle of trust, relief, and a little Christmas magic for the kids who need it the most.”

Live entertainment will provide music throughout the afternoon and evening. Front Porch Trio is scheduled to perform from 2 to 5 p.m., followed by Hat Trick from 6 p.m. until dark. The performances will serve as a lead-up to the evening’s fireworks show.

In addition to food and entertainment, vendors are welcome to participate in the event, providing visitors with an opportunity to browse local products, crafts and other offerings while enjoying the festivities. Organizers hope the event will create an atmosphere where neighbors can gather, reconnect and celebrate together.

The celebration comes as communities throughout the United States prepare to recognize the nation’s semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Across the country, cities and towns are planning events to honor the nation’s history, heritage and enduring spirit. Bland’s celebration aims to bring that patriotic spirit to the local level through an event centered on family, community service and hometown pride.

While organizers hope attendees enjoy the fireworks, music and food, Koch said they also hope the event inspires reflection and forward thinking.

“While celebrations and entertainment bring people together, we hope the core takeaway is recognizing and appreciating how far the nation has traveled over the last 250 years, honoring the sacrifices that secured our freedoms, while acknowledging the work still required to build a more perfect Union,” Koch said.

She said organizers also hope the event encourages younger generations to become involved in their communities.

“We hope to inspire the next generation to take ownership of their local communities, ensuring that the unique history of our towns and cities is preserved and carried forward,” Koch said.

Organizers said the event is designed not only to commemorate an important moment in American history but also to strengthen community ties, support local children and celebrate the values that have sustained both the nation and communities like Bland for generations.
