BELLE — Belle High School (BHS) teacher Elaine Mcconnell partnered with Missouri Department of Conservation Educator Ashley Edwards on Sept. 13 to provide an intro to kayaking class at Belle City Park.

Thanks to the collaborative effort under the direction of Mcconnell, a physical education and health teacher, students were exposed to an introduction into kayaking class as part of the school’s curriculum.

“Approximately 95 students ranging from grades ninth to 12 grades, all enrolled in physical education courses, eagerly participated in this unique and engaging opportunity,” Mcconnell said.

Edwards, a seasoned educator with MDC, spearheaded the initiative by providing all necessary equipment and leading the instructional sessions.

The class, held at the lake in Belle City Park, focused on imparting crucial water safety knowledge. Students learned the correct method of wearing a life jacket, including proper adjustment for a secure fit. Practical skills were also emphasized, such as covering techniques for effective paddling and the correct way to hold a paddle. Additionally, students were instructed on safe entry and exit procedures when maneuvering a kayak.

Following the instruction, students were given the chance to put their newfound knowledge into practice on the water. McConnell and Edwards were on hand to guide and assist the students as they ventured out onto the lake.

“Ashley and I worked with the students while they were on the water,” Mcconnell said. “We had an amazing day and I believe our students had a great time.”

McConnell thanked Edwards and the school administration for their collaborative efforts in making this educational experience possible for the students.

Partnerships such as the one between the Maries R-2 School District and the MDC allow students to be exposed to real-world experiences in their hometowns.

Prior to the event taking place, the Belle Board of Aldermen approved the school district and MDC to utilize the lake for the educational experience.
