Woodruff’s career night leads Tigers to sweep of New Haven’s Shamrocks

Seeing their junior-varsity counterparts post a 57-20 win over New Haven’s JV Shamrocks, John Viehland’s Belle Tiger basketball team went for a doubleheader sweep last Tuesday night in varsity action inside the friendly confines of Belle High School.

Trailing 16-12 after one quarter, Belle outscored the visiting Shamrocks 22-2 before going on to a 69-35 victory to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Hitting for 16 first-half points, senior guard Glayden Woodruff hit five 3-pointers in the second half giving him a record eight for the night en route to a game-high 35 points.

During Belle’s 22-point second quarter, Woodruff accounted for 11 markers while Alec Elrod added six points.

Doubling up New Haven 20-10 in the third quarter, Woodruff added 10 points to his total while Hank Stratman chipped in six points to open the second half for the Tigers.

Scoring all of their points from the land of three in the fourth quarter, Woodruff splashed home a trio of 3-point shots while Garrett Gehlert canned two shots from beyond the arc.

In addition to Woodruff’s 35 points, Gehlert narrowly missed joining him in double figures scoring eight of his nine points in the second half.

Stratman added eight points while Elrod netted all six of his points in the second quarter.

Luke Rohrer chipped in all five of his points in the second quarter while Lukas Smith added four points.

Hank Willis rounded out the Tiger scoring against New Haven with a first-quarter bucket for two points.

Trevor Hinten and Anthony Groner each led the visiting Shamrocks with 12 points apiece.

Racing out to a 24-8 lead after one quarter, Belle’s JV Tigers also improved to 2-0 on the season with a 57-20 victory over the visiting New Haven JV Shamrocks.

Kehlen Struemph accounted for 10 of Belle’s 24 first-quarter points while Kaegan Kinsey added five first-quarter markers.

Edging New Haven 7-6 in the second quarter, Tucker Harris showed the way with three points before halftime.

Struemph (10) and Harris (6) combined to account for half of Belle’s 31 first-half points.

Winning the third quarter 16-6, Struemph added six points to open the second half for the JV Tigers while David Skaggs and Brayden Barzee each added four points.

Miles Frey netted six of Belle’s 10 fourth-quarter points helping the JV Tigers to another notch in the win column.

Following Struemph’s game-high 16 points, Belle’s JV Tigers also got six points apiece from the quartet of Cameron Rehmert, Miles Frey, Harris and Barzee.

Peyton Valley and Kinsey each added five points to go along with Skaggs’ four points in the third quarter.

Malachi Fredendall added a fourth-quarter bucket for two points while Trevor Frey hit a second-quarter free throw for one point to round out the Belle JV Tiger scoring.

Ben Gilbert led the JV Shamrocks with nine points.

Belle’s freshman Tigers had games from Monday at St. James and last night (Tuesday) at Salem canceled.

St. James’ game will be made up at a later date while the Salem contest will not be made up.

Belle’s JV and Varsity Tigers are now idle until Tuesday, Dec. 10 when they hit the road into Phelps County to face Newburg’s Wolves.
