When I was a young lad of eight, my parents had a dilemma. It was the 1960s, and most adults over 21 smoked, including my parents. They knew it was a nasty habit, plus it was unhealthy.
The dilemma was how to keep my sister and I from smoking. So instead of saying, “do as I say, not as I do,” mom and dad quit.
Last week’s column reviewed a video by journalists Johnny Harris and Binyamin Appelbaum entitled “Blue States, You’re the Problem.” The video compared what the 2020 Democratic Party Platform says with what some prominent Democrat-controlled states do.
Harris and Appelbaum found that Democrats don’t always practice what they preach.
I want to expand on Harris and Appelbaum’s report for this week’s column with a few examples I’ve chronicled.
Dark money
Also, in the 2020 Democratic Party Platform was a call to ban dark money. According to a report on MSNBC, “Democrats at first said they felt sick about doing it (accepting dark money) and vowed to hold themselves to a higher standard. They would support super PACs, which publicly disclose their donors, but railed against dark money groups, which don’t.”
That position didn’t last long. As Democrats rail against the influence of dark money with one hand, they use the other to accept it. Tax forms reveal that the left-wing group, Arabella-Managed Funds, raised $1.6 billion in cash donations from anonymous donors in 2020.
Disinformation
The Democracy Integrity Project is a non-profit group backed by liberal donors. The organization states on its 990 tax form that it “seeks to protect the integrity of democratic elections around the world primarily by engaging and managing a network of experienced organizations and individuals who work to uncover details, through research and data analysis, of efforts by foreign actors, including foreign governments, to interfere in democratic elections and to educate the general public about such activities.”
That’s a beautiful mission statement that most Republicans and Democrats would support. I’m for combating disinformation.
Last November, tax documents revealed that the Democracy Integrity Project paid $521,000 to Christopher Steele and $405,000 to Fusion GPS to help finance the infamous Steele dossier.
In case you forgot, the Steele dossier is the epitome of disinformation designed to discredit former President Donald Trump. The dossier, also financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democrat National Committee, falsely asserted connections between former Trump and the Russian government.
Another example of “listen to what I say, don’t pay any attention to what I do.”
Defund the police
Missouri Rep. Cori Bush and other members of the far-left “Squad” are leaders of the “defund the police movement.” According to the Federal Election Commission, as a group, they spent over $325,000 in 2021 on private security — read personal police — for protection. When asked by CBS about this hypocrisy, Bush replied, “You would rather me die? Is that what you want to see? You want to see me die?”
Apparently, Bush does not mind when others lose their lives due to the lack of police protection brought about by her policies.
Support the working man and the poor
Democrats have claimed they are the party of blue-collar workers, the poor and downtrodden for decades. The influx of millions of illegal immigrants — allowed and encouraged by the Democrat party — hurts Black Americans the most. A 2006 paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research estimates that the influx in immigration between 1980 and 2000 “reduced the wage of Black high school dropouts by 8.3 percent, reduced the employment rate by 7.4 percentage points, and increased the incarceration rate by 1.7 percentage points.” President Bill Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers warned that “immigration has increased the relative supply of less-educated labor and appears to have contributed to the increasing inequality of income.”
Just look around. It’s easy to find examples of hypocrisy on display by Democrat leaders.
