Warhawks spoil Tiger senior night in overtime

A three-game winning streak.

That is what John Viehland’s Belle Tigers were going fro Friday night with Bourbon’s Warhawks in town for a Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) hoops showdown.

Seeing their junior varsity (JV) counterparts post a 47-37 victory earlier in the evening, Viehland’s varsity Tigers went for the doubleheader sweep.

Tied at 53-53 entering overtime, Belle was edged 13-11 during the extra four minutes of basketball before suffering a 66-64 setback.

Trailing 19-15 after one quarter, Belle was able to stay within single digits of the Warhawks behind five first-quarter points from Kaiden Robertson and four markers from Baylar Smith in the first eight minutes.

Playing the second quarter to a 16-16 stalemate, Belle entered  halftime very much within striking distance of the Warhawks trailing 35-31.

Myles Butler and Sam Willis each scored six points to pace the Tiger offense in the second quarter.

Willis led the Tigers with eight first-half points adding in his first-quarter bucket.

Edging Bourbon 12-8 in the third quarter, Belle was able to tie the Warhawks at 43-43 entering the final eight minutes of regulation.

Smith scored six of Belle’s 10 fourth-quarter points helping force a four-minute overtime on senior night.

Edged out by two points, the Tigers saw the visiting Warhawks spoil senior night.

Cole Loughridge and Baylar Smith each led Belle with 16 points followed by 10 markers from Willis.

Brayden Cadwallader added six points followed by five from Robertson and four from senior Talyn Litton.

Logan Stratman rounded out the scoring for Belle with two points in overtime.

Nathan Johnson led four Warhawks in double figures with 22 points.

Josh Burns (16), Payton Cranford (11) and Brennan Bouse (10) also reached double figures in scoring for Bourbon.

Racing out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter, Brett Butler’s Belle JV Tigers overcame a sluggish third quarter to post a 47-37 victory over Bourbon’s JV Warhawks running their record to 9-0 on the season.

Hammerin’ Hank Stratman led Belle’s JV Tigers scoring 10 of his game-high 18 points in the second half.

Garrett Gehlert also reached double figures for Butler’s Tigers scoring 12 of his 14 points in the first half.

Luke Rohrer just missed making it three JV Tigers in double figures scoring all eight of his points in the first quarter.

Jon Valley scored all three of his points in the fourth quarter followed by the duo of Tyler Litton and Glayden Woodruff rounding out the JV Tiger scoring against Bourbon with two points each.

Belle’s varsity squads will return to action in a Friday GVC twin bill at Viburnum starting at 5:30 p.m.
